HILLTOPPER ADVISING CENTER

OHIO UNIVERSITY CHILLICOTHE

Academic Success

There are many factors that contribute to academic success and academic difficulty. The Hilltopper Advising Center is here to provide assistance with those issues.

➢ Your faculty members are your first resource for success in your classes. They are

the experts in how you can be successful in their courses. Take the time to visit with your faculty before and after class, as well as spend time with them during posted office hours. See your course syllabi for faculty office hours.

➢ See your advisor regularly and at the first sign of trouble. An advisor can help you

with your academic concerns and connect you with resources or identify new study strategies. Stop by or schedule an appointment with an advisor in the Hilltopper Advising Center for assistance.

➢  Workshops - Workshops are offered several times during a semester. Topics

include: How to Choose a Major, How to read a DARS report, etc. Additionally we make time to visit with students outside of the office during our Advising Roadshow twice a week.

➢  Study Skills Courses - Ohio University Chillicothe offers UC D998 College Reading

Skills, UC 1000 University Success, and UC 1060 Academic Computing Skills. These courses are designed to address reading speed, comprehension, note-taking, test taking, learning styles, time management, and of course, information needed for success.

➢  A great resource for you is the University College publication “The OHIO Guide:

From Orientation to Graduation”. This is a more in depth look at academic success at Ohio University.

➢  GPA Calculator - Calculate your GPA. If you are a new student, enter the courses,

credit hours, and anticipated grades to see your term GPA. To see a cumulative GPA, just enter your current cumulative GPA and number of attempted credit hours (you can find these on your DARS) and the grades you think you will earn in your current semester classes to see what your overall grade point average will be. You can also enter your classes/grades for courses you will be retaking.

Special events to watch for:

➢ “How to Choose a Major” workshops - Get help with determining your best career

match. Take the Self Directed Search, a nationally recognized assessment and get immediate feedback from our advisors. Workshops are hosted in the fall and spring semesters. Determining your career path and establishing a goal is a big contributor to academic success. Watch for email and campus announcements.

➢ Ohio University Chillicothe Majors Fair - This is our biggest event of the year. You have

the chance to visit with representatives from Ohio University Chillicothe and Main campus majors at one time, in one location. Learn about majors we have to offer, minors, courses, and special programs that are available to you. Visit with representatives from Career Services, Study Abroad and more. Access what-if DARS on site for immediate feedback from major representatives. Watch for email and campus announcements.

➢ Advising Roadshow - Our advisors go on the road! We take time to visit with students

where they meet, in the Stevenson Center. Advisors are available throughout the semester in a more casual setting to discuss academic related issues, but also just to chat. Each week, we have a theme or topic to get the conversation started. We look forward to getting to know you better, so that we can be that cheerleader and provide the support you need for academic success. Watch for email and campus announcements.
