OHIO UNIVERSITY - CHILLICOTHE

2017 News Veterans Salute
November 07, 2017 : Veterans Day Tribute

The Veteran Students of America (VSA), Ohio University Chillicothe’s veteran based student organization, is hosting a showing of Korengal on November 9 at 1 PM in the Bennett Hall Auditorium.  This event, in honor of Veterans Day, is free to all and will feature a veteran question and answer panel immediately following the film.

Korengal is a documentary that details the lives of US soldiers fighting in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan during 2007-2008.  Capturing the lived reality of these soldiers, the filmmakers included all aspects of life while deployed including jobs, leaving the barracks to enter villages, combat, and even the small bit of leisure time deployed soldiers are afforded.  “The movie shows real life combat situations,” said Josh Reisinger, President of SVA.  The film also includes interviews with the soldiers who describe their emotions from fear to exhilaration while in combat and also touches on the intense bonds between soldiers in the same platoon.

All students are invited to this event and Reisinger hopes that both military affiliated students and civilian students will attend.  “I hope this film will help establish a connection between veterans and civilians,” Reisinger stated.  According to Reisinger, the film will give non-military affiliated students a perspective into what it is like being deployed and how deployment can change a person.   Immediately following the film, four student veterans plus Reisinger will open themselves to a question and answer session.  Each panelist, two males and two females, has been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.  Audience members are encouraged to ask any questions they have in an effort to learn more about the experience of a deployed serviceperson.  Reisinger hopes to have an open and honest discussion between event attendees and the panelists. “This is a unique opportunity because veterans typically don’t do things like this,” stated Reisinger.  “They don’t open themselves up to the things that are most dear to them such as their experience with war.  The only way people are going to find out about someone is if they ask.”

“This event will provide an opportunity for the OUC community to honor our veterans and gain a better understanding of recent events that have influenced many of our students, their families and their communities,” stated John Fisher, Director of Student Services and SVA’s advisor.   SVA’s OUC chapter was established in 2016 as an effort to continue OUC’s commitment to creating a military friendly campus.  The OUC Veteran Students Office is located in Bennett Hall near the auditorium and can be reached by telephone at 740-772-7730.
