OHIO UNIVERSITY - CHILLICOTHE

2019 News Propel Ohio
September 19, 2019 : Students of all majors encouraged to apply for Propel Ohio

Calling all students! U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has announced that applications for the 5th Annual Propel Ohio Collegiate Leadership Summit are now being accepted. This year’s summit will be held at Bowling Green State University on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Propel Ohio is a leadership program that promotes civic engagement and inspires undergraduate students to grow into civic leaders in Ohio. The conference focuses on Civic Engagement with emphasis on skill building and professional development. Discussions will take place outlining how college students can tackle challenges in their Ohio communities. There will also be workshops, opportunities to network, and training on effective engagement.

Monica Ramirez, founder of Justice for Migrant Women, will be the keynote speaker.

Erica Turner, Ohio University Chillicothe 2019 graduate of Social Work, attended last year’s conference. During an interview last year, Turner stated, “As someone who began pursuing a social work degree because of a desire to promote the well-being of those marginalized the most by society, it only made sense to pursue this opportunity. This conference helped me by not only showing me what was working in other communities to tackle the issue of poverty, but also by allowing me to connect with other people and agencies who are fighting that same fight.”

In addition, Madison Stant, current Early Childhood Education major, also attended the conference last year. She shared, “The Summit benefited me greatly. As a child educator, I need to be aware of the trials that children face so that I can understand how they perform and behave. Not only did the Summit do that, but it also taught me how to recognize resilient children so that I can help them rise above their circumstances and become what they want to be.”

Students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply. No matter the area of study, civic engagement is important in any career.

Each of Ohio’s two-year and four-year public and private colleges and universities are invited to appoint undergraduate students to attend the program. The deadline to apply is Oct. 11, 2019, although Brown has encouraged students to apply as soon as possible.
