2018 News OUC Golf Program Celebrates 50 Years
March 15, 2018 : Ohio University Chillicothe’s Golf Program Celebrates 50 Years

Ohio University Chillicothe’s Golf Program has just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Like college golf, the program has not changed much over the years and neither has its head coach.

OU alumni, Larry Thompson, has been the head golf coach since 2003. Thompson shares, “Coaching golf is my way of giving back to the game I love and my University.” Thompson earned his Bachelor’s in Business Administration Degree in 1996 from Ohio University, though he completed most of his classwork at the Chillicothe Campus.

While attending the Chillicothe Campus, Thompson played an active role in the golf program as he played for four years during his undergrad. Following graduation, he became the assistant coach for Bob Christian and served in this role from 1997-2002. From 1995-1998, Thompson also served as the assistant golf coach at Unioto High School.

Thompson shares, “Playing golf for OUC was something I really enjoyed. It was difficult managing my time, but it is amazing that we always find time for what we enjoy. I had a family, a full-time job, and took a minimum of 12 hours per quarter during the four years I played. I was also older than most other players so it was interesting as I was successful at the game and I competed with fellow competitors who were 20 years younger.”

Students participating in OUC golf can expect better competition than most players have faced previously. With the difficulty of working around class schedules, members of the team are required to practice more on their own; therefore, dedication and discipline are key to their success.

“Extracurricular activities, like golf, will give students memories that they will cherish for their entire life. Although it may be difficult to find the extra time to do other activities, the experience and memories are well worth the sacrifice. It is also an obligation of our current students to keep the sport and traditions of the game alive. For the program to continue to succeed, Ohio University and our current and future students must carry it forward,” shares Thompson.

The OUC golf team plays a spring schedule with matches beginning Mar. 17-18, 2018 at Shawnee State University. Practices are held at the Jaycee Golf Course in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Anyone interested in participating in the program should contact Coach Thompson at leuthom@yahoo.com or 614.325.4143 as soon as possible.
