May 31, 2019 : Ohio University Chillicothe hosts fourth annual College Credit Ready Day

Ohio University Chillicothe hosted the fourth annual College Credit Ready Day on Friday, May 17, 2019.  Approximately 75 college credit plus applicants and their parents from Adena, Chillicothe, Huntington, Logan Elm, Paint Valley, Southeastern, Unioto, Vinton County, and Zane Trace schools attended the event.

For the past four years, the Chillicothe campus has hosted the annual event with hopes of better educating and preparing students for the College Credit Plus (CC+) program. While the program provides free college to qualified participants and is a great opportunity for many, there are also risks that can significantly impact a student’s college career. In turn, College Credit Ready Day has become a growing event for the campus.

To kick off the event, Chillicothe campus Dean Martin Tuck provided a welcome before students and their parents participated in a question and answer session with a panel of faculty, staff, and current CC+ students.

Dr. Dywayne Nicely moderated the panel session with Chillicothe High School Counselor Sarah Hawthorne, Dr. Marguerite Hernandez, Professor Mike Lafreniere, Student Services staff Ashlee Tatman and Cristy Null, and current CC+ student Emma Domo providing expert advice about the program.

The Recruitment Office then provided tours of campus for students and parents. After the tour, students had the opportunity to attend a college class taught by Dr. Robb Moats, biology; Dr. John O’Keefe, history; Dr. Michael Koop, physics; or Dr. Marguerite Hernandez, sociology.

While the students were in class, Dr. John Fisher and Martha Tanedo met with their parents to discuss more details of the college credit plus program and to answer any questions. The event ended in the amphitheater behind Bennett Hall with lunch and a debriefing of the day.

Dr. John Fisher, Director of Student Services, remarked, “Our College Credit Ready Day continues to grow and improve and is a good way for students and parents to learn about this program. We appreciate the high schools, parents, and students for attending because they make it work.”
