OHIO UNIVERSITY - CHILLICOTHE

2018 News ORCC Volleyball Champions
December 17, 2018 : Ohio University Chillicothe volleyball team named ORCC champions once again

For the second year in a row, the Ohio University Chillicothe volleyball team has taken the title as Ohio Regional Campus Conference (ORCC) State Volleyball Tournament champions! But the road to success was not an easy one, as the players had to compete without their head coach by their side.

Head coach Allysa Coyle has been coaching for six years, and this past season was her third-year coaching for OHIO Chillicothe. By the start of the tournament, head coach Allysa Coyle was nine months pregnant with a baby boy. She began having contractions the day of their semifinal match against Ohio University Lancaster and had gone into labor the next morning – the same day of the championship game.

The final match was against Miami University Hamilton, a team which the girls had lost to earlier in the season. After losing the first set, the OHIO Chillicothe girls won three straight sets in a come back to win the championship. This final victory placed the team at a 9-9 overall record and a 5-1 ORCC record for the season. Although Coyle was not there to experience the victory, she did have the luxury of viewing the game at home with her newborn.

Along with the massive championship win, many players had several highlights and awards throughout the season. Senior Bailey Hall had achieved her 1,000th career kill in a game against Wilmington earlier in the season and had the most kills (209). She was also awarded most valuable player and was selected for all tournament and first team all-conference. Taylor Overly, also a senior, earned a spot on the all-conference honorable mention. Baylee Hartman (second-year student) had the most blocks (39) of the season, was tournament MVP, and also received a spot on all tournament and first team all-conference.

Many first-year students on the team also had great highlights throughout the season. Madalyn Eskew served two games this season which resulted in a 25-0 win. She also had the most assists (575) and most aces (37) of all the players. Megan Bellomy had the most digs (290) of all players and was awarded a spot on the second team all-conference. Makencie Wilson was also named most improved player.

Head coach Coyle was asked how she felt about the victory and what the win meant to her. “I can’t put into words how proud I am of the girls and how they finished this season. I was sad that I wasn’t able to make the tournament, but it was so awesome to watch from home while I was holding my newborn son. The girls played with such a passion, drive and love for the game! I am truly blessed to be called coach by these girls!”

Coyle was also asked her thoughts on the upcoming season. She expressed, “I already can’t wait for next season!” She also spoke on upcoming recruitment plans, as two crucial players (Taylor Overly and Bailey Hall) will be lost to graduation. She stated, “I want to continue building our program and hope to build an even stronger team than we had this year and hold on to the State Champion Title.”
