Dr. Lance Mekeel to discuss Shakespeare's impact with local community

Ohio University Chillicothe’s Theatre Program director, Dr. Lance Mekeel, will be giving a talk at the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library July 18 as a part of their “Sack it” with Shakespeare program.

Mekeel will be discussing the two upcoming productions of “Hamlet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which will be performed locally at the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre in July and Sept. respectively.

Through the event, Mekeel hopes to broaden the understanding of these two canonical pieces and the impact they have on audiences. He will discuss the play’s context in which they were first written, the given circumstances of the work, the reasoning behind when and why there were set at that time, as well as the value of their performance today in the space at the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre.

“I think it’s important to talk about Shakespeare and theatre, especially in advance of seeing a production, so that the audience is prepared for the experience,” said Mekeel. “And so, the audience will have a base of knowledge with which to approach the theatrical experience and that way, their expectations are perhaps met or understood prior to attending.”

The directors of these productions will also be in attendance to discuss these works with the audience.

“Because these plays are such a significant cultural foothold for us, to study them and then to see them, most importantly, I think allows us to be more responsible and savvy members of our culture in the ways in which we can talk about and deal with the issues that these plays bring up,” Mekeel noted.

The event begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Northside Branch Library at 550 Buckeye St. in Chillicothe and will last until 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and join in on the conversation about Shakespeare’s work. Admission is free.
