On April 10, the Ohio University Chillicothe Health, Wellness, and Safety Committee hosted a campus event on human trafficking in order to help raise awareness.

Human trafficking is a major issue in the state of Ohio, with the state having one of the highest rates of the illegal activity. Due to the prevalence of the issue, the HWS Committee saw a great need to gather a panel to discuss the problem.

The panel consisted of several different individuals with experience and expertise in the realm of trafficking. The panelist members included:

- Sarah Akbar – SANE/Forensic Nursing Coordinator
- Melissa Callaway – Human Trafficking Survivor
- Julie Fairchild – SANE/Forensic Nursing Coordinator
- Bud Lytle – Chillicothe Police Department Detective
- Julie Oates – Chillicothe Child Protective Center Director
- Samantha Rearly – Adena Survivor Advocate
- Heather Welshimer – Manager of Adena Survivor Advocacy Program

A variety of topics were covered during the event, such as warning signs of trafficking and prevention methods. Those suspicious of human trafficking activities are advised to call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 (TTY: 711) or text at 233733.
