OUC staff engaging in military, veteran education issues

Commentary by Dr. Brenda Phillips, OUC Associate Dean

Imagine a place where state government, educators, and the military collaborated to help military-affiliated veterans and family members transition into college degrees – and then on to meaningful jobs?  It’s happening in Ohio, and at Ohio University Chillicothe.  I recently attended a workshop put on by the Ohio National Guard, where we learned how to better serve those who have served and protected us all. From scholarship programs to student service support, so many ways exist for our military families and veterans to use their well-deserved benefits.

For example, did you know about MTAGS?  The Ohio Transfer to Degree guarantee allows for military training to be accepted for academic credit.  Doing so can expedite degree progress and move a veteran closer to securing a college degree. If you have military training, start here to see what might transfer:  Don’t see what you want or need? Give us a call, in our Veteran Support Office (VSO) at OUC as we are working to increase our pathways from military training into college credit. We are also stepping up efforts to support our veteran student organization and to provide non-academic workshops and events this fall. Faculty and staff are being offered training to be more alert to the needs and circumstances of our military.

Be sure to stop by our VSO in the basement of Bennett Hall to hear more about your opportunities at OUC. Whether you are returning from deployment or are the child of a veteran, we are here for you and look forward to having you on our campus.
