OHIO UNIVERSITY - CHILLICOTHE

2017 News 21st OU Presidential Seal
October 09, 2017 : OUC Student Selected for Presidential Leadership Society

One of Ohio University Chillicothe’s best and brightest students, Morgan Bivens, was selected for President Duane Nellis’ inaugural class of the Presidential Leadership Society.  This elite group of 21 Ohio University students will give their time and talents to advance the President’s initiatives and enhance the University’s mission.  As University ambassadors, these students will participate in a variety of activities over the next year.   Responsibilities include hosting and interacting with OHIO alumni, donors, and other members of the campus community at campus events such as athletic games, public and private functions, and special programs, the first being the Presidential Investiture ceremony on October 18.  Morgan and other Presidential Leaders will receive intensive training and have regular opportunities to interact with President Nellis and other University leaders.

Morgan applied for the program after she was encouraged by OUC Associate Dean Brenda Phillips who stated, “Morgan has emerged as a promising scholar on our campus.  She will represent OUC with poise and professionalism. ” Once Morgan submitted the online application she was contacted by John Rogers, Associate Director for Presidential Events, and later had a phone interview where she was asked her thoughts on leadership.  President Nellis personally called Morgan to congratulate and offer her a place in this year’s class.  OUC is thrilled by Morgan’s acceptance.  OUC Campus Dean Marty Tuck stated, "It is an honor for Morgan to be selected as part of an elite group of individuals to serve as student leaders and advisors to President Nellis.  I am confident she will represent the regional campuses and Ohio University Chillicothe very well as part of the society."  Though she is unsure if she will be joined by other regional campus students, Morgan does know that 15 regional campus students applied for this unique experience.  She will meet Dr. Nellis and the other 20 leaders in Athens on October 8.

No stranger to student leadership at OUC, Morgan is a highly involved student.  A Specialized Studies major with a focus in English, sociology, and history, Morgan is a math and English tutor in OUC’s Student Success Center.  She has participated in a variety of student activities including the Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About WGSS 2000 project, poetry readings, and has recently joined the Student Advocating for Gender Equality student organization.  The 2015 Circleville High School graduate and former College Credit Plus student plans to attend graduate school and someday be an English professor.  She looks at this experience as an opportunity to bridge the gap between Ohio University’s main campus and the regional campuses.  “This is a good time for us to get more connected with Athens,” Morgan stated. “Helping the main campus and regional campus work together would be really cool.”
