HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION (HSA)
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
The mission of the Health Services Administration program is to provide students with the academic foundation to be successful in the health care field. Graduates of the four-year program receive a Bachelor of Science in Health (BSH). The curriculum covers topics such as business administration in health care, gerontology, nursing facility and assisted-living regulations, accounting, reimbursement, marketing, health policy, law and human resource management.
The Health Services Administration program provides students with a fundamental understanding of the health care industry and its professional environment. Health care administrators plan, organize, direct, control and coordinate the delivery of health care. The program prepares students for entry-level administrative or other non-clinical positions in a variety of sectors in the health care industry, including hospitals, physician practices, managed-care organizations, home health care agencies and community health centers.

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Students in the Health Services Administration Program are required to complete a 400-hour internship field experience assignment.
➢ This internship is performed in a health services organization or agency.
➢ This internship is performed in the student’s senior year after all academic
coursework has been completed. It is intended to represent the final “capstone” experience for the undergraduate Health Services Administration major.
➢ The internship is project-based in that the student is expected to produce tangible
output for the host organization. The amount and type of projects are determined by interaction between the preceptor and student. It is expected that the student will select an internship site that is consistent with career interests and objectives.
COURSE OF STUDY
The BSH curriculum may be pursued on either a full-time or part-time basis with day and evening classes available. Students typically start fall semester, but may enter the program at any point during the academic calendar. Full-time students should take 15 or more credit hours per semester.
Part-time students may pursue the degree at a rate they desire, however a minimum of seven credit hours of course work each semester is recommended. Students completing the degree requirements will earn a Bachelor of Health Services Administration.

The BSH program features a unique learning environment complete with multimedia classrooms and internships are arranged state of the art Health Care Institutions.
LOCATION
Bennett Hall, located at the center of the Ohio University Chillicothe campus, is home to the Health Service Administration program.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for admission, a student must be a high school graduate or GED recipient. Students not meeting these requirements should contact the Admissions Office at Ohio University Chillicothe for further information concerning admission. Students completing the degree requirements will earn a Bachelors Degree in Health Services Administration.
BHSA COURSE REQUIREMENTS
A student must complete the BHS major core requirements consisting of 45 semester hours and 34 semester hours of required professional courses. In addition, 30 hours of general education courses and 11 hours of general electives, for a total of 120 hours for degree completion.

GENERAL EDUCATION
Ohio University believes that, as an educated person, you need certain intellectual skills in order to participate effectively in society. These include: the ability to communicate through the written word, the ability to use quantitative or symbolic reasoning, and broad knowledge of the major fields of learning. Therefore, students must take general education courses to complete a degree.
PROGRAM FEATURES

AREAS OF INTEREST
Students of health services administration learn all aspects of overseeing health care facilities and the services they provide. Instruction includes financial management, human resources, and policy-making.

This is a sample template to complete the degree in 4 years. In addition to the major requirements, you must meet university general education requirements of Tier II courses: a minimum of 21 semester hours of TIER II courses that are spread out in the 6 categories. You will need to take advantage of summer course offerings for some Tier II courses so that your load during regular semesters is lightened.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES UPON GRADUATION
Students, who earn a bachelor's degree in Health Services in Administration, work in a variety of positions in health care, such as integrated health care systems, physician practices, public health organizations, community health organizations, health care associations, insurance carriers and third-party administrators.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted a 23% growth for healthcare manager positions through the year 2023, much faster than the average for all occupations.
