Information and Technology Services at OHIO Chillicothe was established to serve the technology needs of students, faculty, and staff. We are dedicated to keeping our computing facilities and offices at the forefront of emerging and new technologies. We currently have almost seven hundred computers on campus. Over five hundred of those computers are in computer labs or public spaces. We have ten instructional labs, two open computer labs, public access stations in the Learning Commons, Library, Bennett Hall, and other areas across the OHIO Chillicothe campus. Our staff maintains the computer and networking systems, compressed video & distance learning classrooms, and all audio/visual equipment on the OHIO Chillicothe campus.

The main telephone number is 740.774.7212 or 740.774.6079. Our walk-up counter is located in the Stevenson Center, just inside the main entrance. The Help Desk is open and staffed to assist with computer, audio/visual and instructional support requests, issues, and training.

THINGS TO KNOW

  • As an OHIO student or staff member, join the "eduroam" WIFI network rather than the "Guest" WIFI network - it is significantly faster and meant for instruction.  To login, use your OHIO email address and password
  • For accessing OHIO systems such as Blackboard, Catmail etc., use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge (All available for Mac OS & IOS). Safari and university systems, especially Blackboard can be problematic
  • Current students and staff are eligible for a free copy of Microsoft Office 365.  The software can be installed from the "Checkerboard" located in the top left corner of the web version of Catmail.  Please note - Use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge to access catmail.ohio.edu and to download and install Office.  A detailed installation instruction sheet can be found on this page under "Self Help Guides" - "Office 365 Pro Plus Installation Guide"
  • PC, Mac & Chromebook users can access the web versions of Microsoft Office 365 from their web browser by going to office365.com, selecting the "Sign Into Your Account" box in the upper right corner of the screen, and signing in using your OHIO email address and password. Please note - since office365.com is a web-based service, an internet connection is always needed to use the applications.  If offline use of the Office suite is needed, installing the free copy of Microsoft Office 365 (described above) will provide use of the applications regardless of internet access (PC & Mac)
  • PC, Mac & Chromebook users can access Blackboard from their web browser by going to blackboard.ohio.edu
  • PC, Mac & Chromebook users can access Catmail from their browser by going to catmail.ohio.edu
  • PC, Mac & Chromebook users can access Microsoft Teams from their browser by going to teams.ohio.edu. Chrome supports the use of a webcam but Firefox does not
  • PC, Mac & Chromebook users can access Tophat from their browser by going to app.tophat.com/login

Computing Resources:

Our classrooms, labs, public spaces, and offices are equipped with computer equipment. All computers at OHIO Chillicothe run Windows 10. These Computers have the following software installed: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC; Audacity; Microsoft Office; Google Chrome; Microsoft Edge; Mozilla Firefox; Cyberlink DVD; IrfanView; Microsoft Photostory; Windows Moviemaker; Microsoft Silverlight; Windows Media Player; Picasa; VLC Media Player; Real Player Lite; Roxio CD Creator; Microsoft SCEP Managed; SPSS (Installed in computer labs, Stevenson 19, and The Learning Commons).

There are also many Macintosh computers on campus running the latest macintosh operating system. These Computers have the following software installed: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC; Adobe Creative Suite; Microsoft Office; Google Chrome; Microsoft Edge; Mozilla Firefox; Safari; Microsoft Silverlight; Windows Media Player; iPhoto; Safari; Picasa; QuickTime; VLC Media Player; Microsoft SCEP Managed, and JAMF.

Each of the dedicated Macintosh and PC computer labs have specialized software installed to support the technologies taught in them.

All of the classrooms at OHIO Chillicothe are equipped with an instructor computer (PC), computer projector, digital presenter, DVD/VHS player, and an amplified audio system.

Wired & Wireless Network Access:

Our staff provides training and technical support for the NextGen wired and wireless computer network on the Chillicothe campus. All university computer equipment is registered and connected to this university-wide computer network, and connectivity is available in all buildings and many open & public spaces across the campus. Students can connect personal computers, tablets, cell phones, or other wireless devices to the "eduroam" wireless network using their current OHIO email address and password.

The "OHIO University Guest" network is open and available to campus visitors without sponsorship and does not require a specific user name or password. To access the network, select wireless networks on your device and choose the "OHIO University Guest". Open a web browser, agree to the terms of use on the displayed page, and your device will be joined. Agreeing to the "Terms of Use" is the only requirement for access. For guides to connect to the "OHIO University" wireless networks, please click (here).

Student Printing Resources:

Our staff supports the many color and B&W copiers located in all buildings across the campus.  Copiers & printers are located in office common areas, computer labs, specialized individual offices, and the Quinn Library.  Pay-to-print services are only located in the Quinn Library.

OHIO Chillicothe, as well as all regional campuses, are in the process of implementing a new Pay-to-Print system which will be fully deployed for the summer 2022 semester.  Pharos and BobCat cash will be used to manage the cost and process of student & public printing.

When "Switched On", student printing from workstations located in the Learning Commons and Quinn Library will be using both Bobcat Cash and their OHIO ID to pay for printing (rather than cash).  Card readers have been installed to accept your Ohio University ID at copiers in the Learning Commons and Quinn Library.

Our current system is print - then pay at pick up.  With this change, printing charges will be incurred when the job is released at the copier.  If you do not want or need what you chose to print (maybe too many pages or printed accidentally), jobs not released at the copier are not charged to the student's account.  Print jobs not released are automatically deleted after one hour.

Adding funds to your OHIO ID using Bobcat Cash

Funds can be added electronically by using a credit card at ohio.edu/bobcat-cash, or in person at the Cashier's Office in Bennett Hall 139.  Cash, check or credit card are accepted.

Funds added to your account at the OHIO Chillicothe Cashier's Office or MyOHIO portal will not be available until the next business day.  All major credit cards (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa) are accepted and are subject to a 2.9% processing fee.

Printing Refunds

If your released print job did not print, you may not have been charged for it. Log into eAccounts at ohio.edu/bobcat-cash to review your charges.  After logging in, click on the ‘Bobcat Cash’ box and your recent transaction history will be displayed.

Refund requests must be submitted within 48 hours of experiencing the printing problem. If it is determined that you are owed a refund, the refund will be applied to your Bobcat Cash account. You’ll receive an e-mail when your refund has been applied to your Bobcat Cash account

Pay-to-print and pay-to-copy resources for our community patrons are located in the Stevenson Center Quinn Library.

Mobile Printing

You can also use mobile printing to send many types of documents to copiers in the Learning Commons and Library. Information about student and mobile printing can be found (here).  You can visit myprintcenter.ohio.edu to upload documents directly to your print queue. Mobile printing supports several common file formats and works best with documents that are of relatively small file size and where you don’t need to customize the orientation and layout.

OULN Support:

Our staff provides training, technical support, and operators for the Ohio University Learning Network (OULN) classrooms on the Chillicothe campus. These five CISCO Telepresence classrooms are used to link our campus to the other regional campuses, as well as the OHIO Athens campus, to offer a wide range of classes taught by faculty across the OHIO system. These rooms are also used for video conferencing and meetings inside/outside OHIO.

Classroom Computing & AV Resources:

All classrooms are equipped with screens or projection surface, video projectors, multimedia instructor station (computer, DVD/VCR, ceiling-mounted speakers, audio amplifier, and digital presenter). Operating information for faculty using a classroom instructor cart in any OHIO Chillicothe classroom can be found by clicking (here).

If any additional equipment is needed, such as a slide projector or overhead projector, please request the equipment by contacting the Computer Help Desk in Stevenson Center at 740.774.7212 or 740.774.6079.
 
If equipment in your classroom is not working, please do not remove equipment, attempt to service it, or remove equipment from another classroom.  Instead, please call the Computer Help Desk for assistance: 740.774.7212 or 740.774.6079. Help Desk personnel will come to the classroom and resolve the issue.

Mobile Computing Carts

Mobile Laptop Instructional carts are available to be delivered in Bennett Hall (MELL Cart) and the Technology and Business Development Center (LET Cart). Each cart has 20+ PC laptop computers with a standard software configuration and internet connectivity. Use of this resource must be scheduled in advance. Information for faculty use can be found by clicking (here).
 
Mobile video conferencing carts are also available in Bennett Hall, Stevenson Center, and the Technology and Business Development Center. Each cart consists of a 40" plasma display, computer with wireless keyboard, mouse, internet, webcam, and DVD/VCR. Software on these systems includes Microsoft Office 2019, multiple web browsers and media players, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Hangouts.  Advance notice of at least 24 hours is required and requests are handled on a first come - first served basis.  Reservation information for faculty and staff can be found by clicking (here).

HELPFUL INFORMATION

Computer Security & Phishing

Phishing is the act of sending a fraudulent message, claiming to come from someone you know/trust, that requests personal information from you to be used for malicious purposes. This includes login credentials, financial/banking/identity information, sensitive business data, and other private information. Phishing messages have at least three “Red Flags”. Even one red flag in an email message should make you skeptical.

Red Flag #1: Emotion

  • These messages will try to elicit an emotional response. They will contain phrasing that requires immediate action on your part “Or Else.” These messages may also promise financial reward for a quick response. Legitimate emails from friends or businesses will not use the emotional trick of "swift or immediate action is required on your part".

Red Flag #2: Odd Language

  • These messages are oddly written. If you receive an email from a colleague or friend who asks for information, but their email signature does not use their preferred name (Tom instead of Thomas), you should be suspicious. The request may also have grammatical/spelling errors and does not use the "tone" that this person would normally use. Another red flag is the email "From" address does not match the person/department that supposedly sent it! While odd language is not a perfect way to identify a phishing email, it is worth considering.

Red Flag #3: Call to Action

  • These messages require you to do something. If the email requires you to click an embedded hyperlink, download an attachment, or "Sign In" before a deadline, you should be wary. Use the “Look - Don’t Touch” technique regarding links embedded in emails. If you hover the mouse cursor over the link without clicking, it will show the destination address. If the "Email From Your Bank" links to an address not associated with your bank, it’s safe to say that this email is a scam and a phish.
     

OHIO works with its internal IT security team and external partners to provide a safe and secure computing environment. Occasionally, a phishing scam email (a fraudulent message requesting personal information from you for malicious purposes) will make it past our external and internal spam filters. To avoid giving away your password in response to this kind of email, keep these tips in mind:

  • OHIO will NEVER ask you to verify, confirm, or re-activate your account over email.
     
  • If you receive an email that tells you to click a link to keep something bad from happening to your account (deactivation, over-quota, etc.), that email is a scam. Please delete the email without clicking on embedded links or responding.
     
  • If you receive a link in an email - a file share, a document approval, an expense report notice, a .PDF that requires a login to view, etc. - ask yourself, "Was I expecting this?" If not, contact the sender to verify the request BEFORE you click. Even if you are expecting a link, mouse over that link (Look - Don't Touch Technique - Red Flag #3) and look at the URL. Malicious sites may look identical to the real thing, but the URL may use a variation in spelling or a different domain (.com instead of .edu.)
     
  • Think Before You Click!!!

When logging into computers and/or business/personal accounts (Catmail, OneDrive, BlackBoard) in any public area, log out of these computers and/or accounts when finished. Leaving these systems and/or accounts open and walking away is like leaving your wallet behind with all of your identification, credit cards, and cash inside.
