The mission of the Ohio University - Chillicothe Student Success Center is to create and maintain a welcoming, supportive learning environment for students on campus and to address the immediate academic needs of students - of all levels of proficiency - through individualized peer-to-peer tutoring. These services are developed FREE of charge for all currently enrolled Ohio University - Chillicothe students.


The Student Success Center can be found adjacent to the Quinn Library, located in the Stevenson Center. The Student Success Center helps promote student learning through the following programs:

➢  Math Center
➢  Writing Center
➢  Technology Center
➢  Appointment-based, Academic Tutoring
➢  Supplemental Instruction (SI)
➢  Summer Refresher Modules


During the fall and spring semesters, the Math and Writing Centers have staff on hand during university operating hours:



Monday 9:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday 9:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. 

Wednesday 9:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Friday 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Closed Saturdays/Sundays/University Holidays*




Our staff of peer math tutors offers FREE math assistance to students on a walk-in basis Monday through Thursday typically between the hours of 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM and Friday from Noon until 4:00 PM. NO APPOINTMENT IS NECESSARY. Please check with the student receptionist to sign in and see if a tutor is available for your math course. Individual or small group math tutoring appointments may also be requested if you are in need of long-term tutoring assistance to help you with your math course.

*There are five important things to remember when working with a Math Tutor:

1.  If after reviewing all the material, you still don't understand, get help right

away. Do not wait until you get too far behind and are feeling really helpless. If you make sure you understand math, you will like it and do well.


2.  Be prepared before you ask for help. Read the material, go

over class notes, look at examples, and try to work the problems.


3.  If you get stuck on a problem or cannot arrive at the answer, do not erase your

work! Looking at what you've done wrong, as well as what you've done right, will help the tutor understand where you are having trouble.


4.  Ask questions! Teachers or tutors are paid to help you, and if you

do not ask questions, they will not know how to help. Even if you're not sure exactly what to ask, you can still say you don't understand. If after an explanation you still don't get it, say so - and ask if they can explain it another way. Whatever you do, don’t pretend to understand. Have your helper back up, if necessary, or explain the concept in different ways until you are confident that you can work the problem.


5.  Don't be afraid to let the person helping you know how you feel about

math. Share your math history with your teacher, or friend, or tutor. Let them know about any bad or good experiences you may have had. Let them know what your fears are. Let them know what helps or hurts. You will be surprised at how much more people can help if they understand from where you are coming.

Whether you are researching, writing a first draft, double-checking citations, or just sitting scratching your head, the Writing Center can help you with your writing projects. Our staff of trained and skilled writing tutors offers individual sessions Monday through Friday.

Call 740.774.7779 or visit the Student Success Center to set up an appointment or for walk-in tutoring on a first-come, first-serve basis. In addition, the Student Success Center has (10) PC computers and (2) Mac computers for accessing web sites designed to accompany writing textbooks (when these are on-line and available), as well as useful writing and grammar web sites.

Remember, the Student Success Center also offers:

In accordance with both university codes regarding academic honesty and time-proven learning strategies, the Student Success Center follows these policies:

➢  All students are responsible for their own writing projects. We do not write any part

of a student's essay; however, we are happy to discuss effective writing strategies at length.


➢  We do not proofread or edit student essays. Instead, we help identify individualized

patterns of error that can be corrected, helping to strengthen the writer’s strategies beyond the single assignment.  


➢  We do not evaluate or estimate grades. The instructor of record is the only one who

can do that.


➢  We adhere to the Ohio University Student Handbook in terms of defining “cheating,”

“academic misconduct,” and “plagiarism”; such dishonesty or deception will not be tolerated.



Technology Center:

Each semester a Technology Tutor arranges a set period of eight hours to be available in the Student Success Center to help students with the technical aspects of their assignments. These hours are announced at the beginning of the semester. This tutor can help with programs such as:

➢  Word
➢  PowerPoint
➢  Excel
➢  Access
➢  Publisher
➢  Basic Programming (C++, Visual Basic, Java, etc.)
➢  Web Design (HTML, XHTML, et.)
➢  Blackboard



Appointment-Based, Academic Tutoring:

Tutoring in other subject areas (such as Sign Language, Spanish, French, Art History, Women and Gender Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, and others) can often be arranged. If you are in need of tutoring assistance for a class other than math or writing, please notify your instructor to determine if options are available through the Student Success Center. You may also inquire at the Student Success Center or by calling 740.774.7779.



Supplemental Instruction (SI):

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of weekly review sessions offered to students who are taking historically difficult classes. SI is provided for ALL STUDENTS in the participating class who want to improve their understanding of the course material and who want to improve their grades.

Attendance is VOLUNTARY. Think of SI sessions as a time to get together with classmates to compare notes, review key concepts, and develop effective strategies for studying and preparing for quizzes and tests.

All sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders who are students themselves and have been successful in the class previously. SI Leaders attend class with you, hearing what you hear, reading what you read, and helping you grapple with tough material. Because these competent students have “been there and done that,” they can guide study groups through review sessions efficiently.

As a student, all you need to do is ask yourself if you have the drive, the motivation to work hard and excel in these challenging courses!



Summer Refresher Modules:

During the summer, the Student Success Center offers valuable review for students refreshing their skills in order to retake and score higher on the COMPASS Test. We have personalized modules that cover areas of grammar, composition, sentence structure, and arithmetic skills - preparing you for college level English classes and college-level mathematics.
