ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (EVT)

ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE

 

The Environmental Engineering Technology program is designed for those seeking a career in environmental engineering with areas of emphasis in environmental cleanup, air and water pollution control, health physics, and site investigation, sampling and analysis. The program provides educational experiences that lead to employment or further educational studies in environmental engineering, environmental health, hazardous materials management, occupational safety and health, applied management, technical and applied studies, and specialized studies.

COURSE OF STUDY

The EVT curriculum may be pursued on either a full-time or part-time basis with day and evening classes available. Students typically start fall semester, but may enter the program at any point during the academic calendar. Full-time students should enroll in 15 or more credit hours per semester. Part-time students may pursue the degree at a rate they desire, however, a minimum of seven credit hours of course work each semester is recommended. Students completing the degree requirements will earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Environmental Engineering Technology.

 

 

EVT FACILITIES

The EVT facilities include the use of an eight-acre Outdoor Training Complex complete with above ground storage tanks, mock remediation scenarios, environmental sampling locations, and hazardous materials response stations.


These are the same facilities used by business and industry to train their employees in the areas of environmental sampling and worker health and safety – making it a suitable learning environment for networking with others.


In addition, environmental lab space is available for sampling and analysis educational opportunities.

 

 

LOCATION

The Technology and Business Development Center, located on the east side of the Chillicothe campus, is home of the EVT program.

 

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for admission, a student must be a high school graduate or GED recipient. Students not meeting these requirements should contact the Admissions Office at OHIO Chillicothe for further information concerning admission. Students completing the degree requirements will earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Environmental Engineering Technology.

GENERAL EDUCATION

OHIO believes that, as an educated person, you need certain intellectual skills in order to participate effectively in society. These include: the ability to communicate through the written word, the ability to use quantitative or symbolic reasoning, and broad knowledge of the major fields of learning. Therefore, students must take general education courses to complete a degree.

An Associates Degree in Environmental Engineering includes:

technology utilization

➢  Environmental Chemistry, Air and Water Pollution Control, and Hazardous Waste

Operations and Emergency Response

➢  Environmental sampling of water, soil, and air, Health Physics and radiation

protection, and air sampling and analysis

➢  Fluid Mechanics and Analysis of Environmental Pollutants
➢  Special topics such as alternative energy

The EVT program is continually working to include in our course offerings the latest insights and education in the areas of environmental engineering technology.

In addition, the EVT areas of interest thrive on problem-based learning and critical thinking skills. From this, students can apply these skills and knowledge in innovative and entrepreneurial efforts or use them as a gateway to furthering their education.

Suggested Program Template

This is a sample template to complete the degree in two years. In addition to the major requirements, you must meet university general education requirements of Tier II courses: a minimum of 21 semester hours of TIER II courses that are spread out in the six categories. You will need to take advantage of summer course offerings for some Tier II courses so that your load during regular semesters is lightened.

WORK EXPERIENCE CREDIT

Many opportunities exist for students interested in the EVT program to apply their previous, relevant work experiences and completed certifications towards college credit. Contact the Program Coordinator for more information.

 

 

COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS

Many HMT courses are acceptable substitutions for EVT courses.

 

 

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES UPON GRADUATION

As for prospects, our past graduates of the program provide a good indicator of employability. Our students have gone on to work as Environmental Health and Safety supervisors and technicians for manufacturing facilities, work as compliance officers for state and federal environmental agencies, work as consultants for environmental, health, and safety companies, and work as technicians in wastewater facilities, laboratory facilities, etc.
 
As a technician, students have started out with an annual salary between $25,000-$35,000 per year, but a bachelor's degree commands more. The companies who have hired our students have included: PPG, GE, DuPont, Glatfelter, Mills Pride, USEC, US EPA, Ross County Water Co., agriculture companies, etc.
 
As we look to the future, prospects in our region may include the USEC operation (in Piketon, OH), area manufacturing, water treatment facilities, and state agencies. Regionally, Columbus and Cincinnati markets are better regional choices at this time. Nationally, our students have obtained employment in Nevada, California, Indiana, and other parts of the U.S.
