2015 BennettHall 2

In 1962, Chillicothe found a solution to the greatest challenge it had faced during the establishment of the regional campus: the construction of a campus. To prove to Ohio's General Assembly the area was prepared to support this ambitious initiative, a $200,000 fund drive was launched to cover the payments on the land.

The efforts were successful, and in 1966 Bennett Hall, named after Chillicothe's prominent Bennett family, became the central building of Ohio University Chillicothe. Classes were first offered in the hall on September 19, 1966, 20 years and three days after OHIO Chillicothe's first night classes took place at Chillicothe High School.

Today the building serves as the central location of all student activity. It houses faculty and administrative offices, classrooms, and the campus auditorium. A teaching laboratory and mock nursing labs are also located in Bennett Hall. In 2009, a summer renovation project added a parkway plaza as well as other major renovations which revitalized the face of campus.

Shoemaker Center

OHIO Chillicothe's Shoemaker Center is considered one of the top athletic facilities among the state's regional campuses. The venue was dedicated in 1979 in honor of the late Myrl Shoemaker, who served in the Ohio House of Representatives for 24 years and was lieutenant governor from 1982 until his death in 1985 at age 72. Prior to its construction the Hilltoppers' home games were played at Bishop Flaget School. Shoemaker insisted that the campus have a top-of-the-line facility and was extremely influential in the process of the building's construction.

The Shoemaker Center features a full-length basketball court, free-standing baskets, bleacher seating to accommodate approximately 2,400 spectators, and a walking track that is heavily utilized by both campus members and community residents. In addition to serving as the location of games and practices for OHIO Chillicothe's men's and women's basketball teams and the women's volleyball teams, the facility also hosts special events, including graduation ceremonies, physical education classes as well as various community functions. The campus's Health & Wellness Center, classrooms, and a concession area can also be found in Shoemaker Center.

During the winter break of the 2013-2014 academic year OHIO Chillicothe invested in new lighting for the building. The cost- and energy-efficient T5 fluorescent fixtures replaced the gym's mercury vapor lights. The Chillicothe campus was reimbursed almost $6,600 by American Electric Power (AEP) as a result of the energy savings.

Childhood Development & Family Service Center

A $3.4 million dollar, 21,000 square-foot facility, the Child Development and Family Service Center at OHIO Chillicothe was officially completed in the fall of 2006. The Center has been operational since September 2007, and is open 6:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The center provides a high-quality educational experience for area children while serving as valuable practical experience for Chillicothe campus students majoring in early childhood education or nursing. On a weekly basis, the Center serves over 300 pre-school children and over 200 Ohio University Chillicothe students.

The Center services the home base of employment for 40 employees from six different agencies. The Ohio Department of Education and the Job and Family Services licenses the ten preschool classrooms.

The facility includes 13 classrooms, three small attached playground areas, five therapy rooms for children/infants with disabilities, a courtyard, an inside "town square" commons area, a conference room, a nurse's room, receptionist area, full-service kitchen, and eight small offices.

Agencies that comprise the Center’s Preschool Partnership include Ross County Community Action, Head Start, Ross County Board of Developmental Disabilities (DD), Chillicothe City Schools, Ross County Job and Family Services, Walnut Street United Methodist Church, WeeCare Outreach, and OHIO Chillicothe education classes.

Both agencies and area community organizations collaborate on center - wide projects. The United Way sponsors the Dolly Parton Imagination Library where each child under the age of five receives an age-appropriate book. The United Way and the Center partner to sponsor family night events where parents and children participate in center activities, listen to a story or a play, or read a book together. Each child also receives a free book from Kohl’s and a stuffed animal from Easter Seals. The National Resources Conservative Service created a Butterfly Garden in the court yard and planted a People’s Garden for families and the surrounding neighborhood to use during the summer. The Jaycees provide gifts for children in need at the Center and each child receives clothes and toys for Christmas.

Technology & Business Development Center

OHIO Chillicothe's Technology and Business Development Center, which first became operational in January of 2012, is the first LEED (Leadership in Environment and Energy Design) certified building on any of OHIO's regional campuses. By providing resources and support to students and area residents, the center helps make concepts and business ventures a reality and while also supporting local economic development.

The center is the result of an 8,200-square-foot addition to the Technical Studies Building that increased the building's total size to approximately 13,900 square feet. OHIO Chillicothe's Technology and Business Development Center offers a variety of services, including consultation through SCORE and OSU South Centers, workshops and seminars, university courses, and a library of tools and resources.
