Certificate Overview

Designed for Health Care, Social Work, Education and Other Professionals

This certificate is designed for those in health care, social work, and education and other professions who need a better understanding of best practices addressing the needs of women, LGBTQ persons, and survivors of violence.

Courses cover the intersections of gender, sexuality, medicine, and health care.

It is a graduate certificate. Applicants need to have earned a bachelor’s degree, but no GRE is required.

To earn the Gender, Sexualities and Health Certificate, students will take three of four courses, for a total of 12 credit hours. No prerequisites are required.

Courses are offered on a regular rotation:

  • Fall 2018: Gendered Bodies
  • Spring 2019: Medicine, Science and Sexuality
  • Summer 2019:
    • Gender, Sexualities and Healthcare Policy (Summer I)
    • Sexual Violence and Survivor Advocacy (Summer II)

Graduation Requirements

Minimum 12 semester hours (3 courses) required.

Choose 3 courses from the following:

  • WGSS 6000: Gendered Bodies: Students explore how gendered bodies are created within systems of power and how gender is embodied through beauty, race, sports and play, menstruation, sexuality, disability, cancer, intersex and trans bodies, and pregnancy. (4 credits)
    • Taught by Dr. Julie White, who earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work has focused specifically on the ethics and politics of care-work and she is the author of Democracy, Justice and the Welfare State: Reconstructing Public Care and contributor to Care Ethics and Political Theory.
  • WGSS 6010: Medicine, Science & Sexuality: This course studies how the history of medical and scientific approaches to sexuality, as well as contemporary medical practices, shape modern discourses of sexuality. Students examine how medicine shapes global discourses of sexuality within the context of the legacy of European colonialism. Students reflect on issues relevant to LGBTQ diversities, contraception and abortion, as well as sexual health, desire, and morality. (4 credits)
    • Taught by Dr. Myrna Sheldon, who earned her Ph.D. in the History of Science from Harvard University in 2014 and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Rice University. She is a faculty affiliate of the Program for Science, Religion, and Culture at Harvard Divinity School and is the editor of Cosmologics Magazine.
  • WGSS 6020: Gender, Sexuality & Healthcare: This course is an introduction to selected topics in the intersections of gender, sexuality, medicine, and health care. Students will learn how to think about medical issues intersectionally, from epidemiological trends based on gender and sexuality, to contemporary health policy debates. (4 credits)
    • Taught by Dr. Berkeley Franz and Dr. Daniel Skinner, faculty in Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Franz is a medical sociologist whose research and teaching focus on community-based philosophy, social theory, and health policy. Skinner’s scholarly interests include health care politics and policy; the politics of medicine and disease; hospital-community relations; the health of marginalized peoples; and feminist theory.
  • WGSS 6030: Sexual Violence & Survivor Advocacy: Survey of the social scientific literature on the history of sexual violence and the evolution of its definitions; the social correlates of offending and victimization; the social patterns of different forms of sexual offending; the programs and policies aimed at reducing sexual violence, processing offenders, and meeting the therapeutic and social institutional needs of survivors. (4 credits)
    • Taught by Dr. Thomas Vander Ven, whose specializations include sexual violence and bystander intervention; drinking and drugs; and the sociology of social problems.

  • GPA (or equivalent) of 3.0 or better in most recent degree program.
  • Official transcripts
  • English Proficiency. International students whose native language is not English also must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS academic). To be considered official, test scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to Ohio University. A TOEFL-iBT of 90 or IELTS composite of 6.5 across all bands is required. Admission Deadlines

Students can start any semester—fall, spring or summer.

The deadline for submitting applications for a summer session is April 15. The fall semester deadline is July 15. The spring semester deadline is Nov. 20.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are assessed based on the number of credit hours of enrollment, Ohio residency and program. See "Graduate Programs with Differential Tuition" on the Tuition and Fee Rates webpage. The current Ohio resident cost (tuition and fees) is $508 per credit hour; the non-Ohio resident cost per credit hour is $527.

Courses are 4 credit hours each, and the certificate is a total of 12 credit hours.

Program Mission

The Gender, Sexualities and Health Certificate addresses a critical need for online, post-baccalaureate programing for professionals in the health care, social work, and education fields. The GSH Certificate advances the scholarly knowledge and cultural competency of adult learners by helping them to develop critical thinking skills for serving diverse populations. 

Program Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the certificate, learners will be able to develop best practices to address the unique needs of diverse populations of women, LGBTQ persons, survivors of violence, and members of underrepresented groups.
