Languages Offered at Ohio University

Languages offered at Ohio University range from modern to classical, from African to Asian, and more. Students can fill language requirements or earn majors, minors and certificates.

Students who took a language in high school can take placement tests and benefit by continuing their language studies during their first year.

Many students choose to double major or add a minor or certificate in a language.

Akan

Akan belongs to the Kwa subdivision of the Niger –Congo group of African languages. Over 40% of the Ghanaian population speak various dialects of the Akan language as their mother tongue.

Arabic

Today Arabic is spoken throughout the Arabian Peninsula. It is the mother tongue of over 225 million people in Africa and Asia.

Chinese

Chinese is spoken by over 1 billion people. This means that one of every five people in the world is a Chinese speaker.

  • Beginning-level courses offered starting summer 2017, to be expanded upon in the future depending on demand.

French

Courses include conversation, composition, French for business, French and Francophone literature and culture studies, French film, phonetics, stylistics, and methods of language teaching.

German

The German program prepares students for a variety of career paths, including education, translation, and international business, and lays the foundation for graduate studies in German or related fields.

Greek

Their bodies are dead; their voices live on—for those who long to hear them. Learn to read the very words of Homer, Plato, Thucydides, the New Testament.

Hindi-Urdu

To understand a place as complicated as South Asia, one must understand its languages.

Indonesian-Malaysian

Indonesian, known in-country as Bahasa Indonesia, is the official language of Indonesia and is spoken by more than 200 million speakers throughout the archipelago.

Italian

Italian is known as one of the most beautiful and interesting of the Romance languages. Italy has contributed a great deal to the cultural heritage of the Western world and has tremendous influence in art, literature, music, classical studies, film and more.

  • Beginning sequence starts in fall, summer.
  • Study abroad offered every summer in Florence, Italy for eight weeks.
  • Advanced Conversation and Composition sequence starts in fall.

Japanese

Over 130 million people around the world speak Japanese; most live in Japan, but Japanese speakers live in almost every country around the world.

  • Four year sequence offered.
  • Japanese minor
  • JJSP (Japanese for Specific Purposes) courses such as Business Japanese 1, Spoken Japanese, and Japanese Reading courses that complement the core curriculum offered most spring semesters depending on demand.

Khmer

  • Two-year sequence offered.

Kikuyu

Latin

Romance, the Renaissance and Rome still resonate today, from comic books to science.

Malay

Portuguese

  • Upper division courses for speakers of other Latin-based languages, including students with at least a conversation level of Spanish, Italian or French.

Russian

Courses range from introductory through advanced courses in Russian. Students have the option of majoring or minoring in Russian, as well as the opportunity to study abroad in Moscow, Russia.

Somali

Somali, the national language of Somalia, is also spoken in Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, and Djibouti. Thus, Somali is a regional language that is spoken in the Horn of Africa Region.

Spanish

Spanish courses provide students with a base of knowledge not only in languages but also in cultural content so vital for understanding and navigating the world.

Sudanese

Swahili

Swahili is the most widely spoken African Language in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is the national language of Tanzania and Kenya, and is also spoken widely in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Comoros.

Thai

Thai is the official language of Thailand, a kingdom of roughly 60 million people. Thai, a monosyllabic and tonal language, is unique in that it bears little resemblance to any of the neighboring languages of East or Southeast Asia.

Twi

Vietnamese

Vietnamese, which likely originated in the Red River valley, has existed as a spoken language for more than a millennium. Vietnam's literary tradition, however, is much younger, dating from about the 10th century.

Wolof

As a West-Atlantic language mainly spoken in Senegal and Gambia, Wolof is also used in the Southern part of Mauritania. Migration, business, and trade have broadened the horizons of the language to some parts of Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Mali.

Zulu (IsiZulu)

IsiZulu is one of the 11 official languages spoken in South Africa. Approximately 10 million people in South Africa speak isiZulu as a first language and many more as a second language.
