Teaching English for Specific Purposes (TESP)

Non-Credit, Online Program for Teachers of English

Teaching English for Specific Purposes (TESP) is a non-credit, online program designed to prepare current and future English teachers with practical tools and ideas to develop courses and teach all types of English for specific purposes in any given country.

It provides a foundation in theory, research, and practice in teaching specialized English language courses.

Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion from the English Language Improvement Program at Ohio University.

Whom is the TESP Program For?

The TESP program is designed for pre-service or in-service language teachers.

Applicants must submit the following. Records for one test score below:

  • 63 or higher in TOEFL iBT/500 PBT
  • 5.5 or higher across all bands in IELTS
  • 625 or higher TOEIC
  • B2 or higher CEFR

A 150-250 word statement of purpose of why you are interested in this program.

Courses Offered in the TESP Program

The TESP program is offered every January-April, June-August, and September-December.

Students take three core courses and one elective. Students take the courses sequentially, for a total of 14 weeks to complete the certificate.

The TESP courses are non-credit bearing.

Three core courses that run sequentially:

  • Introduction to Teaching English for Specific Purposes (4 weeks)
  • Teaching ESP with Technology (4 weeks)
  • Teaching Portfolio (2 weeks)

Elective (choose one):

  • Teaching Business English (4 weeks)
  • Teaching Tourism English (4 weeks)
