Study Abroad Opportunities for Economics Students

American Economic Association

China Study Program

The China Study Program provides an opportunity for Economics majors in the College of Arts & Sciences to combine the college's foreign language requirement with an emphasis on the economics of China.

Students interested in the China Study Program must take the following courses in their freshmen or sophomore year: Chinese 1110 and Chinese 1120.

In the summer after the freshmen or sophomore year, students in the China Study program may choose to complete the college's foreign language requirement by enrolling in Chinese Language and Culture in Beijing, China. Through the generosity of alumni, the Economics Department is able to offer on a competitive basis a China Study Program scholarship to partially offset the cost of the study abroad program.

Alternatively, students in the China Study Program may complete the college's foreign language requirement by taking Chinese 2110 and Chinese 2120.

Internships in China or other Asian countries, varying from one to four weeks, also may be available for students in the China Study Program. Contact the Economics Department for more information.

Students enrolled in the China Study Program must take one of the following classes as an economics elective:

  • ECON3400 International Trade
  • ECON3410 International Monetary Systems
  • ECON3500 Economic Development
  • ECON3510 Agricultural Development
  • ECON4750 Chinese Economy
  • ECON4760 Economics of Korea, Japan and South East Asia
