Defeating Ignorance

Dr. Bayyinah Jeffries’ research focuses on civil rights and Black Power movements, race relations and 20th century historical content that explores the intersection of race, gender and nationalism. Her most recent scholarship focuses on shedding light on female agency where historically it has been overlooked or ignored.

Her book, A Nation Can Rise no Higher than Its Women: African American Muslim Women in the Movement for Black Self-Determination, 1950-1975, does just that. It explores not only the position of some of the chief female nation leaders, but recognizes the organization as a progressive, religiously affiliated group, which treated its women with far more respect than other congregations of its day.

Jeffries teaches courses on black masculinity and the history of injustice.
