What is your hometown?
When did you start your college search?
Junior year of high school
How did you find Ohio University?
My mom and brother attended; I knew about their sport management program being ranked #1. Many students from my high school above me as well as the same age attend as it is so close to my hometown too.
What do you remember from your college visit?
How beautiful the campus was and really seemed like my home away from home being in a college town. The students on College Green and my tour guide were all so passionate about being a Bobcat.
Why did you choose Ohio University?
I chose OHIO for academics. I heard great things about the College of Business and specifically the sport management program. It is also only 45 mins from my home which was nice. My mom and brother could not have said more great things about how amazing it is to be a Bobcat, and I wanted to experience it for myself. I love how proud everyone is to be a Bobcat.
The College of Business and Athens
What are you studying? How did you come to that?
Sport Management with minors in business analytics and marketing. In high school I was the statistician for my basketball and baseball team all four years. I played multiple sports as well and wanted to work in this field. I knew I wanted to be in the sports world and work with a team forever and learn the business behind it.
Reflect on your Cluster experience.
My Cluster experience was one of the most unique, challenging and greatest times as a student at OU. Working with my teammates to research the industry and learn many transferable skills have helped me in so many ways. Skills such as presenting to multiple professors, researching in depth, solving complex business problems and creating slide decks. Working with my group was the most rewarding part. My group worked hard enough to obtain the highest grade in the class on our final project for both groups I was a team member of. However, this experience was unique given the pandemic. We finished our second semester completely virtual. My professors and teammates were still just as committed and driven to work as hard if not harder. Everyone works hard to succeed and bring our creative ideas together. Cluster will always be a favorite time of mine during college.
How else are you involved on campus?
I was involved in Sigma Kappa Sorority and was a part of the Ohio University Baseball Analytics team. However, now, I have a job as a server in uptown Athens at Pigskin Bar and Grille.
What is your graduation year? What do you want to do after graduation?
My graduation year is 2021-2022, I have hopes to graduate a semester early for this coming December. I would like to get a head start on applying for jobs and being on the search early. Career wise, I know I want to work in professional baseball or basketball. I would love to move to Florida after graduation and work for the Tampa Bay Rays. My exact job is still undecided. I like the analytics side as well as the operations/development and front office.
Share about your advisor? Your Career Coach?
My advisor has been extremely helpful every year with helping me find the best options of courses to take as well as deciding my major and minors. Lori Mardis has helped me get all the credits I need to not only graduate but graduate one semester early! She helped me find summer courses as well. My mentor I view in the College of Business who has helped me the most is Anne Valeant. She helped me find my current internship and truly wants to see me succeed and will help in any way she can to make sure I get there.
What’s a classroom lesson that has stuck with you?
There are many classroom lessons over the years that have stuck with me. Topics relating to ethics and leadership in sport, relating to sport governance. A few other lessons that will always stick with me is doing what is always right, no matter the situation. Be willing to work hard and do the little things to build connections and get your name/brand out there. Having networking skills and being able to relate to people while showing good work ethic will make you successful.
Favorite campus landmark? Place to study? Place to eat. Coffee?
100% my favorite campus landmark and place to study is Donkey Coffee. The best people work there, they have the best coffee, muffins, and study space/music. Once I graduate, I might miss this place the most. It is so good to escape here either on the balcony or inside for spending hours doing homework or reading your favorite book. A new place that I have recently enjoyed going to as well is the Ornery Vets café. They support a great cause as well as have amazing coffee and smoothies! Supporting local shops in my college town will always be important to me.
What is your favorite thing about Athens, Ohio?
My favorite thing about Athens, Ohio, is the people and community. It is truly the safest, most comfortable and fun place you could ever be as a college student. The students, faculty and locals are all there to support each other.
