International Business Work & Study Program

The International Business Semester in Ohio Work and Study Program (IBS in OHIO) gives students from outside the United States the opportunity to obtain work-related experience, focused international business training, and an Ohio University International Business Certificate in one semester. Students in this program will complete the required coursework for credit and participate in the OHIO International Consulting Project. This program is offered every Fall and Spring semester.

In order to participate in the program, you must enroll at Ohio University as a non-degree student, and obtain a J-1 visa for short-term study. Once you have submitted an application and been admitted to the program, Ohio University will provide you with the paperwork required for your visa application. You will be required to pay full-time tuition and fees as well as an additional OICP fee, and you will be responsible for all of your travel and living expenses (see below).

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must be in good academic standing at an accredited university with above average grades, the equivalent of a 2.75/4.0 grade point average or higher.
  • Applicants should be in their third or fourth year of studies.
  • Students of business and economics are strongly preferred.
  • The minimum English language level required for this program is IELTS 6.5 (with no subscore below 6.0) or TOEFL 80 (iBT, with no subscore below 17).

How to Apply

  1. Complete the Ohio University non-degree application
  2. Request an official transcript and a certified, literal translation from your current university. Transcripts must show courses you have completed and the results that you received, plus your current standing at the institution. All documents must be in envelopes sealed and stamped by the institution.
  3. For the J-1 visa, obtain proof of financial coverage for the duration of your stay at Ohio University.
    • The minimum amount you need to show for one semester is $18,453.  This includes your Athens Campus tuition and fees as a non-resident student, estimated housing, meals and living expenses (see below), and the OICP fee of $500. This amount is based on the estimates provided by University Admissions for the year (divided in half to cover only one semester) plus the OICP and the International Student Services orientation fee.
    • Generally accepted financial documentation includes a signed letter from your sponsor confirming the amount of funding that will be provided and a letter from your sponsor's bank confirming that this amount is available.
    • If you will receive a scholarship, please provide evidence of this status, including the expenses that will be covered or amount provided.
  4. Arrange for an official TOEFL or IELTS score to be sent to Ohio University directly from the testing agency. Ohio University's institutional code for the TOEFL is 1593; IELTS paper score reports must be sent directly to admissions at the address below.
  5. Mail the non-degree application, transcript (and translation, if applicable), and proof of financial coverage to:

  6. An admission decision will be made within 4-6 weeks after we have received your complete application packet. If you are admitted, you will first be notified via email. Then your admissions packet will be sent to your mailing address on your application 2-4 weeks after the decision is made. The admission packet will include information to help you plan for your arrival at Ohio University.
  7. You may arrive up to 30 days in advance of the start date of the program, but you MUST arrive by the start date listed on your DS2019.

Housing and Meals

You have the option of staying in university dorms or renting a private apartment. Note that you will be responsible for securing your housing and making all related arrangements, but please let us know if we can be of assistance.

If you stay in university housing, you will be required to purchase a Meal Plan for university dining halls. If you stay off campus, purchasing a meal plan is optional.
