Q: John Newton Templeton holds a special place in Ohio University history as the first African-American OHIO graduate and only the fourth African-American to graduate from college in the United States. In what year did Templeton receive his OHIO degree? (Hint: One hundred years later, OHIO completed construction on Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, named after Templeton and Martha Jane Hunley Blackburn, the first African-American woman to graduate from Ohio University.)

THE ANSWER IS: B. 1828

John Newton Templeton was born a slave in 1805 and freed in 1813. He graduated from Ohio University with an A.B. in 1828. He was an educator and co-edited The Mystery, one of the first African-American newspaper published west of the Allegheny Mountains.
