Q: True to the colors of Ohio University, athletic teams were called “The Green and White” for quite some time. What year did OHIO adopt the Bobcat as the official mascot?

THE ANSWER IS: D) 1925

After the athletic board decided the teams needed a new nickname, a campus-wide contest began. OHIO student Hal H. Rowland earned $10 as a first-place prize for proposing the Bobcat. The name was officially adopted on Dec. 7, 1925, by former President E.B. Bryan.

Originally called Mr. Bobcat, the Bobcat mascot debuted at the 1960 Homecoming game where the Bobcats triumphed over archrival Miami. The costume, constructed with a papier-mâiché head, was designed by men of Lincoln Hall.
