Faculty members highlighted for transformative education
Ohio University Provost Pam Benoit recently gave $100,000 to the academic colleges to reward faculty whose teaching extends well beyond the classroom. Arts and Science Dean Benjamin Ogles formed a three-person faculty committee that reviewed more than 100 nominations and selected the top 10 percent of the college's instructors for the new award. Approximately 40 winners were selected. "All of our faculty are dedicated employees who do an excellent job," said Ogles." This group goes above and beyond to share their work and disciplines and perspective." Visit the link above for the list of winners.
Playwright and theatre professor continues to inspire
Charles Smith, head of the Ohio University Playwriting program, gave the distinguished professor lecture in honor of Founder's Day on February 18. Each year Ohio University selects one faculty member for the distinguished professor award. Smith's lecture addressed the value of the performing arts and theatre.
Smith's newest play, "The Gospel According to James," will premiere at the Victory Gardens in Chicago, May 22.

Joint academic venture to educate entrepreneurs
Ohio University's new Center for Entrepreneurship will provide academic and applied learning courses, a combination of which will allow students from any college or major to earn a Certificate in Entrepreneurship beginning in the fall of 2012. Courses and applied learning projects are currently being piloted at the College of Business and the Voinovich School with additional faculty from other colleges joining the program in the future, adding to the course offerings. Recommended by Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit and approved by the Ohio University Board of Trustees, the new Center for Entrepreneurship is a partnership between the College of Business and the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs.

Founders Day celebration brings students and faculty together
On Feb. 17, a group of faculty, staff, students, and community members kicked off the Founders Day celebration in Baker University Center Theater. The two-evening event began with a speech from President Roderick McDavis. McDavis highlighted the recent success of students and faculty and stressed Ohio University’s history of achievement.
"We continue to be a place of promise and distinction today," he said.
Following McDavis' speech, a video featuring Stan Alost, an associate professor of visual communications, Kristen Altenburger, a junior studying applied mathematics, and Keith Hawkins, a sophomore studying astrophysics was shown. All three spoke about the unique research or education they pursue at the university.
The celebration continued Friday night, when distinguished professor of theatre Charles Smith gave the faculty keynote lecture. Smith was also honored when McDavis unveiled a portrait of him that will hang in Alden library next to the other distinguished professor portraits. "It is because of his commitment to scholarship and teaching that we are here this evening," McDavis said.
Alumni invited back to campus for Alumni College and Golden Weekend
Whether you're celebrating your golden anniversary as a graduate of the class of 1961, your 40th anniversary as a graduate of the class of 1971, a returning Alumni College participant or a "PURRR-ennial Bobcat" (graduates of the 1960s and prior) the Alumni College and Golden Weekend has much to offer!
This annual weekend for all Ohio University alumni takes place July 11-14 on the Athens campus. Alumni College classes are offered each of the four days, cover a wide range of subjects, and are taught by Ohio University's stellar faculty. Though separated by 10 years, Jim Wikoff '61 and Jim Wycoff '71 have a lot in common. Both have been active with the Ohio University Alumni Association for over 20 years. Wycoff, a former Alumni Board of Directors member, has helped organize multiple reunions for OHIO alumni and also helped create the Financial Economics masters degree now offered by the economics department. Wikoff, meanwhile, has been an active member of the Tampa Bay, Florida Ohio Alumni chapter and recently helped bring back the Alumni College weekend.
Now the two are working to organize the 40th Anniversary of the Class of 1971 and the Golden Reunion, slated with Alumni College on July 14-17. Wikoff said those celebrating their 50th graduation anniversary are mostly senior citizens and will therefore enjoy reliving their days as students, while Wycoff said, "We always get that warm feeling as we get closer to Athens that we get younger and younger."
Thank you, Bobcats, for your support!
We're excited to announce that we have just rolled out an update to our gift-processing tool (located at ohioalumni.org/give). In addition to a few visual tweaks and some process simplification, our biggest new feature is the ability to set up an automated monthly, quarterly or annually recurring gift. This is a huge step forward for us, and we hope it makes the giving process simpler for all our supporters.
We'd be delighted if you'd send us your feedback! Please contact Sam Venable, Assistant Director of Annual Giving, via e-mail or Twitter to let him (and the annual giving team) know what you think of the changes or if you have any questions.
As always, we are grateful for your support and wish you all the best in 2011.
