Undergraduate Commencement 2011: 'Anything is possible'
Ohio University graduated more than 4,000 students on June 11 at its 257th undergraduate commencement. Atul Gawande delivered the commencement address, impressing upon the graduates the message that, "...anything is possible in this life."
McDavis approves campus-wide sustainability plan
President McDavis has approved the Ohio University Sustainability Plan, combining the goals of Vision Ohio, the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment and House Bill 251 in pursuit of a more sustainable future for Ohio University. The plan, composed by the President’s Advisory Council for Sustainability Planning (ACSP), features 18 objectives, 35 benchmarks and around 100 strategies in areas including transportation, energy infrastructure, academics and research, and dining. Mark Halliday named Distinguished Professor
English professor Mark Halliday has been named Ohio University's 2011 Distinguished Professor. Halliday has taught in the creative writing program at OHIO since 1996, and is an internationally recognized authority on poetry. A writer of both poetry and essays on poetry, Halliday’s work has been published in both Princeton and Johns Hopkins University Press. Halliday has received numerous awards for his work, including the Lila Wallace/Reader’s Digest Foundation Writer’s Award 1998-2000 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 1996.
David Jefferies' latest feature talks about his passion
Ohio University student David Jefferies '11 graduated with more in hand than just a diploma -- he co-wrote and co-directed a full-length feature film. As a student in the School of Media Arts and Studies, Jefferies spent much of his senior year working on his film, "The Passageway," based on a play by Ohio University alumna Merri Biechler about a reluctant caregiver. With the help of co-writer and co-director Teresa Strebler, the film premiered on June 5 at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Auditorium.
Campus reduces electric usage during June 23 test
Ohio University has successfully demonstrated that it can reduce its electric usage to help combat the increasing cost of utilities. The campus participated in a Demand Response Test on Thursday, June 23 during which it initiated controlled shutdowns of air handlers, chillers and other equipment in various areas of the campus. OHIO was able to reduce electrical usage by 6.6 percent for one hour of the test, during which Facilities received no calls regarding problems from the areas affected by the shutdowns. According to Executive Director of Facilities Management Mike Gebeke, the purpose of the test was to demonstrate OHIO's ability to decrease its electrical usage by 4 megawatts to be eligible for the maximum payment to the central utility account.
Alumni Networking in Cincinnati
Cincinnati alumni helped themselves to food, fun and lively conversations during an alumni reception held June 23 at Montgomery Inn at The Boathouse. Guest speakers were Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis '70 and Alumni Association board chair Arlene Greenfield ’71. Board members were able to enjoy networking opportunities with area alumni as part of their Summer board meeting weekend activities. More than 100 alumni attended the outdoor event on a perfect summer evening.
COFA 75th Celebration: July 8|Nov 3|April 14
Ohio University’s College of Fine Arts announces the celebration of its 75th anniversary as an Ohio University college. Several events are being planned, with alumni in mind, in honor of this milestone, beginning in July, 2011 and ending on April 14, 2012.
To kick off the year-long celebration on July 8, 2011, the College’s Kennedy Museum of Art will open the exhibition "Jim Dine: Sculpture and Large Prints" by world-renowned contemporary artist and Ohio University alumnus Jim Dine, (BFA, ’57).
Dine will return to Athens for another 75th Anniversary celebration event, "A Conversation with Jim Dine," on Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Auditorium. Both the exhibition, which ends Nov. 27, and the discussion event are free.
The anniversary celebration culminates with the College of Fine Arts 75th Anniversary Gala program on April 14, 2012, at 8 p.m. at Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium. The Gala is a signature event for the Ohio University Alumni Association's Spring Alumni weekend April 13-15 and will feature a program of performances by acclaimed artists as well as work by former and current faculty from each school.

San Francisco Alumni Reception

Alumni College & Golden Weekend
Whether you're celebrating your golden anniversary as a graduate of the class of 1961, your 40th anniversary as a graduate of the class of 1971, a returning Alumni College participant or a "PURRR-enial Bobcat" (graduates of the 1960s and beyond) the Alumni College and Golden Weekend (ACGW) has much to offer.
Attendees are invited to participate in campus tours and socials, renew their vows during the "OH, I dO" ceremony at 18:04, and "graduate" from college in just three days with the enriching workshops presented by OHIO's faculty during Alumni College.
The weekend highlights include Alumni College classes, socials and dinners, class photos and theater and film productions.

Leaders' Advisory Council 2011
The Chapter and Society Leaders Advisory Council was developed by the Alumni Association in the fall of 2005. The Council is comprised of five chapter and five society leaders whose purpose is to give the Alumni Association feedback on operations and potential changes. The council's membership is rotated to different chapters and societies, with the exception of a few key chapters that represent the majority of our alumni. The Leaders Advisory Council aims to advance the mission of the Ohio University Alumni Association by fostering communication between alumni networks and the association, and by promoting best practices among current and emerging alumni networks.

Legacy Scholarship awarded
The Alumni Association is pleased to announce the selection of Paige Fitzwater and Laura Risaliti as the 2011-2012 legacy scholarship winners. The legacy scholarship was started in 2003 and first awarded during the 2010-2011 school year to Laura Risalit, making this her second year to receive the scholarship.
