McGee Brown appointed to Ohio Supreme Court
Gov. Ted Strickland made a historic appointment to the Ohio Supreme Court on Dec. 10, selecting OHIO alumna and Board of Trustees member Yvette McGee Brown as the court’s first African-American female member, reports The Columbus Dispatch. McGee Brown was Strickland's lieutenant governor running mate in the 2010 election. McGee Brown will be the third African-American to serve on the state Supreme Court, according to The Dispatch.

Alumna Piper Perabo receives a Golden Globe nomination
OHIO alumna Piper Perabo '98 has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the television drama "Covert Affairs" on the USA Network. Perabo, who graduated summa cum laude with a degree in theater, is competing against veteran television actresses like Julianna Margulies, of "The Good Wife," and Kyra Sedgwick, of "The Closer," for the prestigious award. Bobcats Capture Third-Straight MAC Tournament Championship
Ohio Volleyball became the first team to sweep through the MAC Tournament since 2001 and captured their third-straight conference championship on Nov. 21 with a 3-0 win over Northern Illinois. Sue Jacobi was named the MAC Tournament MVP and Mandy Nichols was named to the All-Tournament Team after their stellar performances.

Rachel Mummey named College Photographer of the Year
Rachel Mummey, a master's student in the School of Visual Communication (VisCom) has been named the 65th College Photographer of the Year. As winner, she will be awarded equipment and additional educational opportunities. Mummey, who also came in first and second place in the "Documentary" category, graduated from the University of Iowa in 2006 with degrees in journalism and fine arts.

Pre-Bowl Game Festivities
The Ohio University Alumni Association Bobcat Bash was a hit, with nearly 220 alumni and friends attending the event at The Superdome in New Orleans on Dec 18 prior to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Game. The Bobcats lost that match to the Troy Trojans 48-21.


Nationwide announces OUAA partnership
On Dec. 3, Nationwide Insurance and the Ohio University Alumni Association announced a joint agreement outlining a partnership between the insurance company and the association. This agreement will offer members of the OUAA potential savings on their auto and home insurance needs.

Graham Stewart, Executive Director of the alumni association, said, "We are very excited about this partnership with Nationwide. Their world headquarters are right up the road from Athens, they employ more than 400 alumni, provide internships for dozens of our students each year, and have existing relationships with many parts of our university. Deadline for Legacy Scholarship application is Feb. 1
Bobcat roots often run deep, with two, three, and even four generations from one family attending Ohio University. Are you a legacy? If so, please identify yourself here to receive a quarterly newsletter with special access and discounts only for legacy alumni.

Students, alumni prepare for Charlotte Networking Week
The Ohio University Alumni Association's Greater Charlotte Chapter Network will host its 8th Annual Charlotte Networking Week, Feb. 24-25. With roughly 1,500 Bobcats residing in the Charlotte, N.C., area, this event allows students to network with alumni living in Charlotte and the surrounding area and to visit various companies and school districts while becoming familiar with the area’s job market.

The event draws approximately 100 current Ohio University students each year, with various activities planned throughout the weekend. To learn more, or to register, visit ohioalumni.org/charlotte.

Return to campus for the first annual Spring Reunion Weekend
Save the date for the first annual Spring Reunion Weekend, March 31-April 3. Class photos, tours and open houses await you as you return to Athens for a fun-filled, spring weekend on the Athens campus. "One Day U" courses will be presented by OHIO's talented faculty on a variety of topics, and couples can renew their vows to the special Bobcats met on campus years ago during the "OH, I dO" ceremony at 18:04.

Other highlights include a retro party held prior to 1980s tribute band BonJourney taking the stage. Whether you're a recent grad, or are celebrating your 10th anniversary or 25th, we invite you to mark your calendars and prepare to make new memories!

Spotlight on volunteers

T.J. Simonik '07 connects students and alumni on behalf of the Ohio University Alumni Association. As President of the association’s Charlotte, N.C., Chapter, Simonik has planned and executed a highly successful networking week between OHIO students and alumni during Charlotte Networking Week. A graduate of the College of Business, Simonik is also a member of the Leader’s Advisory Council and secretary of the College of Business Society, serving as the event chair for the first Professional Development Day between College of Business alumni and current students on campus on Sept. 25, 2010. While studying at OHIO, he served in several leadership roles in the professional business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi.

Simonik now is part of the Volunteer Alumni Admissions Network, working with undergraduate admissions to help recruit new students to the OHIO experience. "My experiences and friendships at Ohio University helped me become comfortable in my own skin and find the confidence I needed to succeed," he said. "I am proud to be a Bobcat and can’t imagine my life without Ohio University."
