International offices find
new home

Ohio University’s Office of Education Abroad (OEA) and International Student and Faculty Services (ISFS) has moved to Walter International Education Center. The newly renovated building at 15 Park Place will serve as a one-stop shop for OHIO's international and internationally-bound students. According to Brian Bridges, vice provost for diversity, access and equity, bringing the two offices together benefits OHIO by having a central location for international services.

Ohio Field Hockey earns NFHCA academic awards
Ohio Field Hockey received a 2010 National Academic Team Award and placed six student-athletes on the 2010 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division One National Academic Squad. The National Academic Team Award goes to any program that attains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and the National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester (quarter) of the 2010-11 academic year.

OHIO feature premieres at major film festival
Ohio University filmmaker Annie Howell debuted her feature film, "Small, Beautifully Moving Parts" to a sold-out audience at the prestigious SXSW Film Festival on March 21. The film, about a pregnant tech geek who takes a road trip to reconnect with her estranged mother, was one of only eight narrative competition features selected from an original pool of 984 submissions.

Artist and alumnus Jim Dine returning to campus
Jim Dine, a world-renowned artist and Ohio University alumnus, is bringing an exhibit to Athens. Dine's exhibit in Athens aligns with the upcoming celebration of the College of Fine Arts 75th anniversary, from which he earned his BFA in 1957. The exhibit will be coming to Kennedy Museum of Art July 7 through Nov. 27.

The Student Alumni Board and CONNECT of the College of Business hosted the second annual Diversity Luncheon in early March. Among those in attendance were President Roderick J. McDavis, Vice Provost for Diversity, Access and Equity Brian Bridges and Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi, who served as the keynote speaker.

Approximately 100 students and alumni attended the luncheon, which explored the importance of handling diverse individuals in real life scenarios. Also attending were 15 alumni of different ages and educational backgrounds.

Topics dealt with all types of diversity (race, age, education, socioeconomic class, etc.), addressing respect and collaboration in the work place. The luncheon, in its second year, is anticipated to become an annual event.

This spring and summer, Athens is calling

Save the date for Alumni College & Golden Weekend, July 14-17. This year both the classes of 1961 (Golden) and 1971 (40th Anniversary) are returning to campus. The ever-popular weekend includes classes, campus tours, dinners, a theater production and class photos. For more information and to register, click here.

Thomas Ewing Society members return to the boardroom
Members of the Thomas Ewing Society (TES), an organization whose purpose is to honor those who have served on the Ohio University Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, returned to the OUAA Board room recently. In an outreach effort to acclimate former members of the Alumni Board of Directors to new initiatives of the current Board, a reunion was held during the Winter Meeting, March 3-5, 2011.

Twenty-three TES members returned, collectively representing 36 years of service to the Board. The weekend was not just a time for visiting or a stroll down memory lane or sitting in on meetings. The TES were put to work at a focus group discussion with Dr. Judy Millesen, associate professor at the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, exploring ways that members might be able to further assist the work of the Board.

Spotlight on volunteers

Brian Breittholz '86, '88, who has been an active member of Phi Kappa Tau since graduating with a Bachelors degree in journalism in 1986 and a Masters in Education in 1988, works at Miami University as their Associate Director for Alumni Continuing Education. When he's not volunteering with the Phi Kappa Tau (he planned PKT ’80s reunion three years ago and is currently planning the 100th in May), he celebrates his OHIO roots by returning for Homecoming every fall. Breittholz says the most rewarding thing about planning the Beta Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau’s 100th is "Seeing the number of reconnections over the generations. The 1950s group with David Budd ’59 has a really strong connection; seeing groups from the '80s and ‘90s get excited about coming back."

Although it might seem difficult for such a dedicated Bobcat to work in Miami's alumni relations office, Breittholz takes it in stride. "When OU meets Miami on the field it makes for interesting times. It’s good to have rivalries," says Breittholz.
