Homeland insecurity - Anthropologist Haley Duschinski
Haley Duschinski, an anthropologist, attended a wedding in 2009 that gave her great insight into the culture of the people of Kashmir Valley. Her studies include their use of nonviolent means toward looking at issues of human rights and justice in an area plagued by violent acts and crime. Discussions of this nature take place by citizens all the time, even at events of a personal nature, as witnessed by Duschinski firsthand.
OHIO enters vegan cuisine competition
Hoping to gain another Top 10 finish, Ohio University is once again competing in the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Most Vegan Friendly Contest. The award looks to call attention to those schools whose food selections help meet the needs of all students by providing more and better options. These schools look to provide a variety of healthy food options that provide even students on a strict vegan diet with lots of great meal opportunities.

OHIO journeys to Asia
OHIO faculty and staff recently journeyed to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Hong Kong, China; and Nagano and Tokyo, Japan to improve and strengthen academic and philanthropic relationships between Ohio University and universities, corporations and alumni in those countries. The main universities visited were Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Malaysia and Chubu University in Japan. Besides attending the Tun Abdul Razak Lecture and Luncheon at UiTM, numerous alumni events were held throughout the trip to establish stronger chapters in all major cities mentioned above.
Graham Stewart, executive director of the Alumni Association at Ohio University, saw more than 250 alumni at these events. In addition to taking part in traditional customary activities in these nations, the OHIO contingent met 10 OHIO students studying at Chubu University, and heard from leadership regarding support and additional funding for joint ventures and study programs. There is a plan in place for staff to return regularly to continue to maintain and build on these established relationships.

Datuk Shaik Sulaiman Ismail AA '69 BSED '70 serves as President of the Ohio University Alumni Chapter in Malaysia and has been instrumental in helping build strong ties and bonds between OHIO and Malaysia. The Malaysian alumni chapter had seen a period of dormancy for years before Shaik's election and has since seen growth and excellent networking abilities through his leadership that have allowed the chapter to thrive once more.
In addition, Shaik played a large role in building support for the Tun Abdul Razak Chair in Southeast Asian Studies. His influence can be most easily viewed in the current relationships between OHIO and Malaysia, seen most recently by OHIO staff members on a week-long trip that took them to university partner Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), where Shaik worked shortly after graduating from OHIO. Accomplishments resulting from the partnership between Malaysia and Ohio University include more than 2,400 Malaysian citizens who hold degrees from OHIO, giving them more OHIO degrees than any other country aside from the United States. Appalachian Scholars program given support by 'Homecoming at Ohio University' painting
Betsy Ross Koller, who attended Ohio University where she studied English and voice, spent much of her life abroad in Switzerland. There she studied art and began her painting career. With fond memories of Appalachia in mind, Koller was inspired to pay tribute to her alma mater of OHIO with a painting titled, "Homecoming at Ohio University."
The painting showcases the university at the height of the annual Homecoming parade and includes details specific to OHIO, such as the Marching 110, The Bobcat and Cutler Hall. Koller hopes the painting will inspire alumni to reconnect with their alma mater and remember their great times in Athens. Limited edition proofs and prints of the painting are available at the Bobcat Store, with proceeds going to the Appalachian Scholars Program. The program benefits high school graduates in the Appalachian counties of Ohio and is merit- and need-based. Scholarships are awarded to a student planning to study at any of the Ohio University campuses.
If you are interested in giving back to the youth of southeast Ohio through the Appalachian Scholars Program, please contact Samuel Venable at firstname.lastname@example.org or 740-593-2206.
