Points of Pride

Two new professorships awarded from $95 million Russ gift
Two professors of chemical and biomolecular engineering, Srdjan Nesic and Gerri Botte, have been awarded and named Russ Professors in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, earning a salary supplement and travel budget to promote their work, all made possible through a $95 million estate gift made to Russ College in 2008.

Innovation Center nurtures alumni’s top-ranked renewable energy business
Ohio University alumni Geoff and Michelle Greenfield are working toward decreasing energy bills for their clients and creating a clean energy system. Their efforts have helped their firm become Ohio’s 16th fastest-growing private firm. They credit the support of the University toward a portion of their success.

Scripps College of Communication named a Center of Excellence
The Scripps College of Communication has been named a Center of Excellence in Culture and Societal Transformation for the state of Ohio. It is the only college of communication to receive this distinction. President McDavis hopes this distinction will bring even more attention to the individualized programs, methods of study and overall work of students, faculty and alumni of the college.

Homeland insecurity - Anthropologist Haley Duschinski
Haley Duschinski, an anthropologist, attended a wedding in 2009 that gave her great insight into the culture of the people of Kashmir Valley. Her studies include their use of nonviolent means toward looking at issues of human rights and justice in an area plagued by violent acts and crime. Discussions of this nature take place by citizens all the time, even at events of a personal nature, as witnessed by Duschinski firsthand.

OHIO enters vegan cuisine competition
Hoping to gain another Top 10 finish, Ohio University is once again competing in the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Most Vegan Friendly Contest. The award looks to call attention to those schools whose food selections help meet the needs of all students by providing more and better options. These schools look to provide a variety of healthy food options that provide even students on a strict vegan diet with lots of great meal opportunities.

A Week to Remember: Homecoming Week Events Oct. 11-17
Homecoming 2010 commenced on Oct. 11 with a kickoff event in Baker University Center, while uptown merchants participated in Paint the Town Green displays. The Alumni Association offered Historic Hayrides and a family-style BBQ dinner at The Ridges on Friday along with the annual, memorable Alumni Awards Gala. OUAA staff also hosted a free Coffee Hour at The Front Room prior to a great Homecoming Parade on Saturday morning. OUAA also sponsored a Bobcat Bash pre-game lunch at Grover Center. The Bobcat football team then capped off the weekend by defeating the Akron Zips, 38-10. For photos and videos of the week's events, visit ohioalumni.org and ohio.edu/compass.

OHIO journeys to Asia
OHIO faculty and staff recently journeyed to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Hong Kong, China; and Nagano and Tokyo, Japan to improve and strengthen academic and philanthropic relationships between Ohio University and universities, corporations and alumni in those countries. The main universities visited were Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Malaysia and Chubu University in Japan. Besides attending the Tun Abdul Razak Lecture and Luncheon at UiTM, numerous alumni events were held throughout the trip to establish stronger chapters in all major cities mentioned above.

Graham Stewart, executive director of the Alumni Association at Ohio University, saw more than 250 alumni at these events. In addition to taking part in traditional customary activities in these nations, the OHIO contingent met 10 OHIO students studying at Chubu University, and heard from leadership regarding support and additional funding for joint ventures and study programs. There is a plan in place for staff to return regularly to continue to maintain and build on these established relationships.

Bobcat Bash at Miami a sweeping success
Last Saturday's OHIO vs. Miami homecoming football game in Oxford was preceded with a Bobcat Bash hosted by both the Dayton and Cincinnati Chapters. Held just outside Miami's Yager Stadium, the pre-game event brought visiting Bobcats together with the cheerleaders, Rufus, and Jim Schaus, director of Intercollegiate Athletics, to celebrate OHIO with good food and flair. President McDavis encouraged lots of Bobcat pride for the Green and White with a spirited welcome to the fans. The Bobcats went on to beat Miami with a final score of 34-13.

The final Bobcat Bash of the season will be hosted by the Philadelphia Chapter on Nov. 16 near Temple Stadium in Philadelphia. For details, click here.

Spotlight on volunteers

Datuk Shaik Sulaiman Ismail AA '69 BSED '70 serves as President of the Ohio University Alumni Chapter in Malaysia and has been instrumental in helping build strong ties and bonds between OHIO and Malaysia. The Malaysian alumni chapter had seen a period of dormancy for years before Shaik's election and has since seen growth and excellent networking abilities through his leadership that have allowed the chapter to thrive once more.

In addition, Shaik played a large role in building support for the Tun Abdul Razak Chair in Southeast Asian Studies. His influence can be most easily viewed in the current relationships between OHIO and Malaysia, seen most recently by OHIO staff members on a week-long trip that took them to university partner Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), where Shaik worked shortly after graduating from OHIO. Accomplishments resulting from the partnership between Malaysia and Ohio University include more than 2,400 Malaysian citizens who hold degrees from OHIO, giving them more OHIO degrees than any other country aside from the United States. Appalachian Scholars program given support by 'Homecoming at Ohio University' painting
Betsy Ross Koller, who attended Ohio University where she studied English and voice, spent much of her life abroad in Switzerland. There she studied art and began her painting career. With fond memories of Appalachia in mind, Koller was inspired to pay tribute to her alma mater of OHIO with a painting titled, "Homecoming at Ohio University."

The painting showcases the university at the height of the annual Homecoming parade and includes details specific to OHIO, such as the Marching 110, The Bobcat and Cutler Hall. Koller hopes the painting will inspire alumni to reconnect with their alma mater and remember their great times in Athens. Limited edition proofs and prints of the painting are available at the Bobcat Store, with proceeds going to the Appalachian Scholars Program. The program benefits high school graduates in the Appalachian counties of Ohio and is merit- and need-based. Scholarships are awarded to a student planning to study at any of the Ohio University campuses.

If you are interested in giving back to the youth of southeast Ohio through the Appalachian Scholars Program, please contact Samuel Venable at venable@ohio.edu or 740-593-2206.
