Points of Pride

Speaking Bobcats talk away the competition
The Speaking Bobcats have placed in the top five at the 40th Annual National Forensics Association National Tournament, which was held at Ohio University on April 15-19. Dan Glaser, a fourth-year student at OHIO, was honored as being the top speaker in the nation. The Speaking Bobcats placed first in a combined sweepstakes at the 2010 National Comprehensive Tournament in March, where they also took home 44 individual awards.

OHIO honors Nancy Cartwright
OHIO alumna Nancy Cartwright received the 2010 Ohio Communication Hall of Fame Award from the Scripps College of Communication on April 18. Cartwright is most well known for her work on the television show "The Simpsons" as the voice of Bart Simpson. Cartwright attended OHIO from 1976-1978, finishing her degree at UCLA and credits her success to her experience on OHIO's forensics team.

Baker Peace Conference opens with discussion, controversy
Keynote speaker from the Dutch Parliament, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, addressed an audience at OU on April 8, 2010 as part of the Baker Peace Conference, sharing her upbringing in the Muslim faith in Africa and Saudi Arabia. Many controversial topics, such as arranged marriages and diversity at OHIO, were covered during the speech and the questions that the audience posed for Hirsi Ali afterward.

Athens Film Festival has another stellar year
The Athens Film Festival, taking place from April 23-29, is an annual festival that features about 170 full-length features or shorts, from several categories. Ruth Bradley, who directs the festival, selects the films to be shown from a pile of about 1,000. Bradley said the festival's strength is that it gives coverage to younger and emerging artists and is often the first festival to show their films.

Hollis Summers Poetry Prize awarded
The winner of Ohio University Press's 13th annual Hollis Summers Poetry Prize was OHIO alumnus and author Will Wells, '77, for his book, "Unsettled Accounts: Poems." The annual poetry prize, now in its 14th year, draws several hundreds of entries each year. The prize for the winning manuscript is $1,000 and book publication.

Sabelhaus is a former deputy administrator of the U.S. Department of Small Business Administration, a president-appointed position. She founded and served as CEO of Exclusive Interim Properties from 1986 to 1997 before the company merged with four others to form Bridgestreet Accommodations. Prior to this, Sabelhaus held a variety of management positions for 15 years. Sabelhaus earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ohio University in 1970, a class that is celebrating its 40th reunion this year with a commencement walk and reception.
