OHIO students will study abroad on Gilman scholarship
Three Ohio University students will study abroad in the fall on the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a collective award of $11,000. Donald Lindsay, international business major, will study Japanese in Japan. Alexandra Motz, journalism major, will study Spanish in Costa Rica. Crystalyn Thomas-Davis, broadcast journalism, will study the Twi/Akan language in Ghana.
New appointee to the OHIO Board
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland appointed Kevin B. Lake, D.O., to a nine-year term on the Ohio University Board of Trustees. Lake received his doctorate from the OU College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1992 and is a full-time senior attending physician in family practice.
He will replace Athens businessman Larry Schey.
Sculpture graces Academic and Research Center
A new sculpture was installed in Ohio University's Academic and Research Center, thanks to Ohio's Percent for Art Program. Brooklyn-based artist Alyson Shotz designed the piece, "Angle of Incidence." It is a helix shape, made from square-shaped aluminum tubes, which reflect different wavelengths of light depending on time of day and the angle from which they are viewed.

New student receptions held this month
Incoming freshman from all over the country will get a head start on the college experience at this summer's New Student Receptions. Alumni chapters in Ohio, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., are hosting the events to help students get acclimated to Ohio University.
Dawn Werry, Assistant Director of Regional Programs, says the programs encourage students to be active members of the Ohio University community. The receptions are also opportunities for families to meet and get to know each other before the school year begins. "It's very relaxing, very casual," Dawn said.
Students learn about the many things OHIO can offer, including the Bobcat Mentor Network, which enables students and alumni to get advice from other alumni. Users can find mentors to help with writing resumes or finding jobs in their career field.

Tim Hamilton, who has been an active member of the OHIO community since graduating in 1986, is also known as DJ OBK. When he's not volunteering with the Alumni Association, he runs a DJing and video production company in Cleveland. His services are sought for weddings, school dances and other parties. Hamilton has worked for OU as an administrator in the College of Osteopathic Medicine and in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Hamilton spent four years working with the Black Alumni Cleveland Chapter, and was president for two of those years. He served on the Black Alumni Reunion Committee on three separate years. He said he feels he's part of a tight-knit community of OHIO alumni. "There are a lot of Black alumni who had really positive experiences at OU."
Hamilton has volunteered in the Multicultural Visit Program, and recently donated his DJing services for an Urban Scholars fundraiser. The Urban Scholars program is designed to help high-potential students from inner-city urban areas succeed at Ohio University. To learn more about the program and its scholars, please click here. Or, if you'd like to support these deserving students financially, please click here and select "Urban Scholars" from the "Please designate my gift to:" field.
