President Obama presented with gift from Ohio University

OU giftOn the eve of his inauguration, President Barack Obama was presented with a unique gift from Ohio University's Center for African Studies. Cornel West, a keynote speaker at OHIO's recent conference on progressive Islam, delivered a specially made kente to Obama on behalf of the University on Jan. 19. The kente is a Ghanaian ceremonial cloth historically reserved for royalty; today it symbolizes pan-African culture and heritage. The gift was embroidered by Interior Services staff with the Ohio University logo and personalized with a congratulatory message.

Spotlight on our volunteers

We'd like to extend a thank-you to a few of OUAA's many volunteers, who contribute their time and energy to the Alumni Association and to Ohio University:

Julie MannJulie Mann '02, served the University as former Charlotte Chapter president and former president of the College of Business Society of Alumni and Friends, Leaders Advisory Council member. She also received the Claire O. and Charles Ping Recent Graduate Award. Her involvement, leadership and collaboration with the College of Business Society of Alumni and Friends created the "Charlotte Networking Week," which was awarded the Association's 2004 Most Innovative Program. The proceeds of this event go to the Ohio University Carolina Fund, which provides a scholarship for a North Carolina student to attend Ohio University. Julie's dedication, perseverance and philanthropy led to the endowment of this scholarship in 2006.

Dee Wirkiowski '62, served as a member of the OUAA Board of Directors, former president of the Ohio University Women's Club of Greater Cleveland, and was involved with Women in Philanthropy. Thanks to Dee's tremendous passion and dedication, the Cleveland women's club is as strong today as it was when it was first established in 1939.

Kevin Clingaman '85, has served as president of the Toledo Chapter and attendee of the annual Alumni Leaders Conference. Kevin's commitment to Ohio University is strong; he worked with former president of the Toledo Chapter Earl Apgar to revitalize this once-thriving network of Bobcats.
