Geography Has a Drone!

The Department is now the proud owner of a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced Quadcopter with 2.7K Go-Pro Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal. The camera will be a great resource for classroom applications, as well as faculty and student research projects. Jim Lein is starting things off with a “drone seminar” in the spring! Ohio University celebrates Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 15-21) and GIS Day (Nov. 18)

The Geography Club marked this year’s Geography Awareness Week by hosting a Map & Geography T-shirt sale all week at the Baker Student Center, and by holding a free screening of “In the Footsteps of Marco Polo” (with free popcorn!). This documentary details the filmmakers’ 1993 retracing of Marco Polo's journey from Venice to Anatolia, Persia, India and China. Geography Awareness Week was launched in 1987 by presidential proclamation, and seeks to draw attention to the importance of Geo-literacy and geographic understanding.

The Department of Geography also co-sponsored GIS Day held in the new Schoonover Center, which featured National Geographic editor Dennis Dimick, and our new drone! Click here to watch Dimick’s GIS Day talk on A&S TV.

Joe Ferguson Memorial Scholarship

The Department is elated to announce the creation of a new scholarship for Geography students. Professor Emerita Nancy Bain and her husband George endowed the scholarship with a generous donation, which was then combined with funds from the former Margaret Boyd Research Scholarship (that Nancy established in the 1980s). The Joe Ferguson Memorial Scholarship commemorates the contribution of alumnus Joe Ferguson, who was killed on 9/11/2001 in the plane that terrorists crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Capstone Experience in Geography: Research Poster Display and End-of-the-semester Pizza Party [Dec. 3, 2015]

In our Capstone Experience in Geography course (formerly Senior Seminar) required of all majors, students are required to perform a research project in which they develop geographic research questions, use relevant methods, conduct analysis, and communicate findings. Students work individually or in small groups along with a faculty advisor, who helps students develop project objectives and provides guidance as the project proceeds. The class culminates in a poster display attended by the department at large. This year’s event was a huge success! The photos give a sense of the magnitude of the event (31 posters, two rooms and a hallway, and 20 pizzas!). Congratulations seniors (who posed for a group picture after the event).

The Geography Department greatly appreciates the generous contributions of our donors over the past year. Thank you for supporting excellence in our academic mission.
