As the new dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, I am delighted to present you with our summer issue of the college’s alumni newsletter Engage. Stigall takes a much closer look at species evolution

Picture a world before the continents as we know them, when most of the land mass was south of the equator. Then picture ice caps forming over the southern pole. As the ice caps form, the ocean recedes and local, isolated environments form, and in those shallow marine environments, new species develop.

Alumni invited to participate in Bobcat Mentorship Network

The new Bobcat Mentorship Network is an easy-to-use platform where OHIO students seek guidance, and alumni, faculty and staff coach students in their professional development. Mentors and mentees can apply to participate in the Bobcat Mentorship Network by Sept. 16, and are expected to be paired, based on their mutual professional interests, on Sept. 23.

Stavridis discusses national security risks, opportunities at Baker Peace Conference

In the category of international actors, Adm. (ret.) James Stavridis identified the first threat to American security as dangerous extremism, principally the Islamic State but also Boko Haram and al-Shabaab..

2019 Black Alumni Reunion is Sept. 12-15

A signature OHIO alumni event held every three years, BAR welcomes home the University’s black alumni and friends Sept. 12-15 for a weekend full of opportunities to reconnect with one another. Online registration continues through Sept. 6.

After you enjoy the Homecoming parade and Marching 110, come and meet the new dean of Arts & Sciences at the college’s tent during Homecoming 2019 on Saturday, Oct. 12. Watch for more details.

Start Homecoming with the Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies’ fifth annual Reunion & Roundtables at Homecoming 2019 on Friday, Oct. 11. The keynote speaker is Dr. Lance Poston, executive director for inclusive health and campus partnerships at the University of Kentucky.

Save the date for A&S Career & Networking 2020

Mark your calendars for the college’s third annual Alumni and Student Networking Reception on Jan. 30, 2020. You have valuable experiences to share about career choices, graduate school and internships. Come back to Athens to help fellow Bobcats get a jump on their careers.

New M.A. in Law, Justice & Culture offered on campus, online

The new M.A. in Law, Justice & Culture—focusing on critical analysis of law in relation to society, culture, politics and power in the United States as well as other western and non-western legal traditions—is offered on campus or online.

Online degrees well-suited for dual enrollment teachers

The College of Arts & Sciences now offers three master’s degrees well-suited for secondary schoolteachers who are seeking opportunities to earn the necessary credentials to instruct college-level, dual enrollment courses.

M.A. in English
Master of Social Sciences
M.S. in Chemistry
Plus TESOL endorsement and TEFL certificate

Online graduate certificate offered in gender, sexualities and health

The three-course online graduate certificate can help those in health care, social work, education and other professions better address the needs of women, LGBTQ persons and survivors of violence.

Online certificate in data analysis for those with no statistics, programming experience

A new three-course Online Certificate in Data Analysis is designed for recent college graduates and working professionals without prior background in statistics and computer programming. The program starts in spring 2019.
