The deadline to register for BAR 2019 events has passed, and several events are at capacity and will not be able to accommodate walk-ups. There are many free activities in which guests can still participate. Please check the schedule below carefully.
Black Alumni Reunion (BAR) is a signature alumni weekend that takes place on the Athens campus every three years. The weekend features an engaging mix of casual and formal events – from networking and learning opportunities to entertaining and festive occasions. All programming is designed to welcome the University’s black alumni and to celebrate their ties to OHIO.
 
We look forward to hosting this special weekend in Athens in September 2019.

9:30 - 11:30 a.m. “The Alvin Adams Story” (Schoonover Center 145)
Join members of the Adams family and former colleague Howard Rowe of the Illinois Power Company, for a conversation about Alvin Adams, hosted by Matt Barnes, BSJ '08.
10 a.m. Christopher Davis Exhibit Opening (Southeast Ohio History Center)
Come see an exhibit detailing the horrendous lynching of Christopher Davis, a Black American that was accused of a crime but was given no trial. The exhibit covers the lynching, community reaction, and racial injustice that can still be felt today.
10 a.m. Campus tours (Baker University Center, 4th floor)  Walk-ups welcome! 
 
11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Student and Alumni Networking (Baker University Center 240-242)  This event is at capacity, and unfortunately cannot accept walk-ups.
We’ll be bringing together students and alumni to share their stories. Students can share information about current campus life, while alumni can share stories of life after OHIO. Please note that the doors open at 11 a.m. and the program will begin at 11:30 a.m. This event is at capacity and unfortunately cannot accept walk-ups.
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. New Migration Challenges and the Black Diaspora (Friends of the Library Room, Alden 319)
The African Studies Program, African American Studies, the Global Leadership Center and the Caribbean Scholars Association will host a panel titled "New Migration Challenges and the Black Diaspora".
11:50 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. "Taking the Alvin Adams Story to the Screen” ( Schoonover Center  145)
Join Kyle Bowser, BSC ’80, producer of “Trial By Jury: The ’N’ Word” for a creative development “how to” workshop on how Alvin Adams story might be told in a production.
Noon - 4 p.m. The Inaugural Ohio Athletics Black Alumni Reunion: Sook Academic Center Open House  (Sook Academic Center)
Tour the new Sook Academic Center and get a view of Peden Stadium!
Get photos with Rufus our mascot, along with a photo opportunity as a reunion from 3 – 4 p.m.
Meet & Greet with administrators and coaches.
Don’t miss the chance to reconnect with your fellow teammates and other Bobcats from your era.
1 - 3 p.m. College of Business Legacy and Leadership Social (Memorial Auditorium East Lobby, 47 E. Union St. (utilize the entrance parallel to University Terrace, directly across from Bryan Hall))
The Ohio University College of Business invites alumni for an afternoon of networking with faculty, staff, and current students. Light refreshments will be served and a short presentation from Sly Mata, our new Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion and Luke Pittaway, our Associate Dean. We will also celebrate Ms. Beatrice Selotlegeng as she prepares to retire at the end of this school year!
1 - 3 p.m. The Patton College of Education Open House (McCracken Hall Atrium (first floor))
Calling all alums who majored in Teacher Education, Counseling and Higher Education, Human and Consumer Sciences (Restaurant, Hotel, and Tourism; Retail Merchandising and Fashion Product Development, Customer Service, and Human and Consumer Sciences Education); Recreation (Coaching Education, Health and Physical Education, Outdoor Recreation, and Recreation Management)!

This Open House will welcome home alums from The Patton College of Education! Tour the new building, fellowship with alums, and enjoy some refreshments!

2 - 3 p.m. College of Health Sciences and Professions Open House (Grover Center)
Please join the College of Health Sciences and Professions for a Sip and See Open House. Learn more about the college, tour our facilities, and network with faculty, staff and current students. Food and refreshments will be served.
2 - 5 p.m. LINKS - Blast from the past mixer (OMSAR - 31 S. Court Street, R. 143)
The LINKS - Blast from the past mixer is an excellent opportunity for you to mix and mingle with alumni who will be present during the Black Alunmi Reunion. This is a great networking opportunity to get to know alumni and begin building some connections with them. Also, join us as we celebrate 35 years of LINKS!

Please join us for a Scripps Open House on Friday, Sept. 13, from 2-3 p.m. in Schoonover Center.

Lasher Learning Center, Schoonover Center 130, will serve as home base with fellowship, refreshments and tours.

Reconnect with alumni and advisors from the Specialized Studies programs (BSS or AIS), Criminal Justice (BCJ), and Associate of Arts/Sciences (AA/AS) programs!

This alumni panel discussion will highlight successful communication careers and detail some of the many paths to various professions. This session will be moderated by School of Visual Communication senior Micah Fluellen. Panelists include:

5 - 7 p.m. Alvin Adams Symposium/BAR Reception (Roof of the Athens City Parking Garage, 35 Washington St., Athens, OH)
This reception, sponsored by the Black Student Communication Caucus, will feature food, music and fellowship for all.
5 p.m. Blue & White Family 2nd annual meet and greet reception (OU Inn)
Reception for Alumni members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. (Epsilon Omicron chapter) and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.( Beta Epsilon chapter) and members of its former interest group Sigma Sweethearts. Refreshments will be served and a cash bar!
6:30 p.m. Alpha Phi Alpha Centennial Ball (Baker University Center Ballroom)
Formal Ball to honor Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Phi Chapter's 100th Anniversary. Phi chapter is the first African American student organization on campus founded May 17, 1919. This event is open to the public as a ticketed event.
7 p.m. Variety show (Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium)  Walk-ups welcome! 
Songs, dances, dramatic sketches, and a step show. Two DJs, one old school and one new school. Bags will be checked upon entrance to the show per facility policy. Walk-ups welcome!
10 p.m. Movie Night at the Athena (The Athena Cinema)
70s grad Sean Williamson Saffold better known as Sean Delijuan will host a screening of a film that he was involved in. "DESTINATION PLANET NEGRO" Directed and written by Academy Award winner (Best Adapted Screenplay BlackkKlansman) Kevin Willmott. Featuring Trey Byers (Empire),Tosin Morohunfola (The Chi), Keith Loneker (Lakeview Terrace), Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans), and Sean Delijuan.
10 p.m. Urban Scholars Scholarship Fundraiser (The Pigskin Sports Bar and Grill)
Urban Scholars Scholarship Fundraiser hosted by: Brothers: Ty Carr and Dell Robinson in collaboration with the Alumni of Sigma Psi Chapter at Ohio University. Music will be provided and this event is free but donations are welcome. Proceeds to benefit OU's Urban Scholars Scholarships.

9 a.m. - 1 p.m. African Studies Alumni & Friends Network: Bobcat Kick-It-Out (Walter Fieldhouse)
Join for the first-ever Bobcat Kick-It-Out soccer tournament! Sign up to join a team and compete in a five-a-side, 15-minute-half soccer match for a chance to win the grand prize! For more information and to register, please click here!
11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Black Lives Matter Themes Exhibition (Baker University Center, Room 205 Art Gallery)
 
11 a.m. Commemorating the Lynching of Christopher Davis (Lower level Parking lot of Baker University Center)
Christopher Davis, a 24 year old Black farmhand and father of two, was lynched in Athens on 11/21/1881. A White mob of over 30 men took him from the jail before he could stand trial and present his defense against charges of rape and assault of a White woman in Albany, Ohio. A ceremony to commemorate his life and to collect soil from the site to be sent to the Legacy Museum and Memorial in Montgomery, AL will be held at the approximate site of his hanging: the base of the old South Bridge, near the far end of the parking lot at the lower level of Baker Center.

You're not going to want to miss this BBQ! Come ready to engage by decade and participate in decade photos while enjoying good food! Be sure to be there for the decade photos being taken at 1 p.m.!
1:30 - 3 p.m.. Pink and Pearls Reception (Baker University Center 5th floor Atrium)

2 p.m. Screening & Discussion: Trial By Jury: The Case of the N Word (The Athena Cinema)
Join us for an interactive deliberation on Black Alumni Reunion Weekend, presented by Res Ipsa Media and producer/OU alumnus Kyle Bowser. Free admission! Sponsored by the Center for Law, Justice, and Culture and the Scripps Diversity Committee.
5:30 - 9 p.m. Gala (Baker University Center)  This event is at capacity, and unfortunately cannot accept walk-ups.
Location: Baker University Center Ballroom
The 2019 Black Alumni Reunion Gala will pay tribute to Ohio University's African American heritage while honoring Trailblazers. This event is $60 for alumni and $20 for students. The Gala menu will feature a choice of four entrée options. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m., with the dinner at 6:30 p.m.

  • Shrimp scampi
  • Vegetarian dish (TBD)
