This three-part series brings alumni and friends together to uncover the fascinating process of brewing—whether it’s the precise science of fermentation, the creative art of recipe and can design, or the refined taste of a perfect beer pairing. Each installment offers an immersive, hands-on experience designed to engage, educate, and connect Bobcat brewers, enthusiasts, and friends of Ohio University.

Installment 1: The Science of Brewing
Date: Thursday | Nov. 7, 2024 | 6-8 p.m.
Location: Nocterra Audubon, 516 Maier Place, Columbus, OH
Speaker: Dr. Michael Held, Associate Professor & Graduate Chair of the Molecular and Cellular Biology Program, Director of Craft Brewing Certificate
Spend the evening exploring the fascinating science behind your favorite beers. Led by Dr. Michael Held, Associate Professor and Director of Ohio University's Craft Brewing Certificate, this interactive session will delve into the biochemical processes that bring beer to life.
Learn how ingredients like water, malt, hops, and yeast work together to create the perfect brew, and discover how factors like temperature and pH levels affect the final product. Participants will get a hands-on look at the ingredients behind the brewing process.
Whether you're a beer enthusiast or simply curious about the science of brewing, this is an experience you won’t want to miss, and don’t worry, no prior science knowledge is necessary!

Installment 2: The Art of Brewing
Date: Tuesday | Feb. 4, 2025 | 6-8 p.m.
Location: Jackie O's on Fourth, 171 North Fourth Street, Columbus, OH
Speaker: Art Oestrike, OHIO faculty member, alumnus, and manager/owner of Jackie O's Pub & Brewery
Join us for an evening with OHIO alumnus and faculty member Art Oestrike, owner and manager of the acclaimed Jackie O's Pub and Brewery! Art, who teaches the popular course Art of Craft Brewing, will take us on a creative journey through the many artistic elements that define Jackie O's. From the architecture and design of Jackie O’s spaces to the iconic beer can designs, Art will delve into how creativity shapes the brewery experience. Known for collaborating with talented local artists, he will share stories of how each beer label comes to life—from the initial concept to the final product—and how every design reflects the essence of the brew it represents.
This engaging evening will also explore the broader artistic side of brewing, including:
- The thought process behind beer names and branding.
- Working with artists to capture the spirit of the region and brewery culture.
- How Jackie O's architectural design enhances the brewery's identity and visitor experience.

Installment 3: The Taste of Brewing - A Beer Pairing Dinner Experience

Host: Thomas Stevenson, Assistant Professor of Instruction, Director of Food and Beverage Operations, in collaboration with current students and alumni
End the series with a memorable evening dedicated to the art of tasting. This guided dinner pairs a locally sourced menu with carefully selected beers, each course crafted to showcase the harmony of flavors between food and drink. Participants will learn the essentials of flavor profiles, pairing principles, and tasting techniques, all within an elegant setting on College Green. Guided by Ohio University’s own culinary and beverage experts, this immersive experience is an opportunity to savor, learn, and connect in a beautiful, festive atmosphere.
