The Promise Lives Campaign

On June 30, 2015, Ohio University completed The Promise Lives Campaign, the boldest fundraising initiative in the University's history. The Promise Lives Campaign raised $500 million, surpassing its $450 million goal, and has positioned OHIO to advance and support outstanding academic and research initiatives, the student-life experience, our campus environment and other objectives based on Ohio University’s core principles and most notable strengths. The Promise Lives Campaign also allowed the University to mobilize and engage OHIO's loyal alumni, volunteers and donors in new and innovative ways and create a new environment for alumni and student involvement that will lead to generations of renewed support for the University.

The Ohio University Foundation, then known as The Ohio University Fund, was incorporated in October 1945 and was granted 501(c)(3) status as a non-profit organization by the Internal Revenue Service in 1955. Contributions to The Ohio University Foundation are tax deductible to the extent provided by law.

Public recognition of support is frequently expressed through honor rolls that may be in electronic or printed forms. Q&A — Naming Scholarships, Spaces, Etc. at OHIO

Q: I want to name a scholarship, space, building, etc. at Ohio University. What’s the first step?

A: Contact one of OHIO’s major gift professionals and share your ideas and dreams. You might find one working in your college or unit, or you can contact anyone in McGuffey Hall. Q: Is there anything special to consider about naming spaces?

A: In order to name a space (classroom, lab, conference room, etc.), a college or unit will work with University Advancement to determine the value of the asset and the gift amount required to name that space. That amount could be dependent on the size, use, and purpose of the space.  Factors used to determine the value of the asset include, but are not limited to, technology requirements, square footage, and construction or renovation costs. 

Q: What about naming a building; an academic college, school, or department; or another unit or major University asset?

A: The college or unit will work with University Advancement to determine the value of that asset and the gift amount required to name it. Once a  gift agreement   is executed, the college or unit will submit the requested naming for approval during the next possible meeting of the University’s Board of Trustees. Board approval is a requirement. 

Q: Are names ever modified or removed from a University asset?

A: The function of structures (buildings and spaces) on any University campus is fluid, depending on many factors. If the named structure has reached its life expectancy, as determined by the University in consultation with the Foundation, the name will generally not be transferred. At the time of replacement, the donor(s) will have a right of first refusal to provide a new gift to continue the naming of the building or space. If the structure has been named for an endowed gift, the preferences of the donor(s) or the donor’s successor will be solicited.

In addition, the Foundation may modify or withdraw any naming recognition granted pursuant to the gift agreement if the donor(s) commits any act or omission that would reflect negatively on the University or bring its name into disrepute. 

Investment and Management of Endowed Funds

The endowment investment portfolio is professionally managed, with the long-term objective of producing real growth in excess of the endowment spending policy and inflation. The portfolio is broadly diversified into equities, fixed income and alternative investments, including commodities, private equity and hedge funds, with a 75% allocation to equity-oriented investments and 25% to fixed income-oriented investments.

Endowed gifts are invested permanently and accumulate investment income over time. Annually, a small portion of the endowment market value is authorized for expenditure in accordance with the spending policy adopted by The Ohio University Foundation. The spending policy and spending rate are reviewed annually and adjusted, as necessary, with the primary objective of balancing the need for current spending with the goal of supporting future expenditures into perpetuity. Endowment distributions are sourced from accumulated investment income - not the gift itself. Any undistributed investment income is retained with the endowment principal to provide a hedge against inflation, to generate additional growth, and to provide for protection during years with unfavorable or negative investment returns.

Currently, the annual endowment distribution is equal to the product of a 6% spending rate and the endowment's average market value for the trailing 36 months. The 6% spending rate is comprised of a 4% spending allocation and a 2% administrative fee. The spending allocation supports various initiatives, as specified in the gift agreement. This includes, but is not limited to, scholarships and fellowships, chairs and professorships, research activities, and general support of academic units. The administrative fee provides general support for the institution's fundraising, alumni relations, and fund administration functions.

The spending allocation and administrative fee rates apply to accounts whose market value exceeds the historic gift value. Occasionally, due to a downturn in the investment market, an account's market value may temporarily fall below its historic gift value. When this occurs, the endowed account is "underwater." The spending rate for underwater endowments is 1%. Underwater endowments are not assessed an administrative fee. This reduced spending rate is designed to speed the endowment's recovery and ensure the account's ability to provide a perpetual income stream in support of the University.

Unrestricted Gift Rule

On January 1, 2020, The Ohio University Foundation implemented an unrestricted gift rule, which directs a portion of gifts made to non-endowed/current-use funds to The Fund for OHIO, an account within the Foundation that supports University Advancement operations and programming.
