Academic Assistance

Academic Advancement Center
The Academic Advancement Center (AAC) is Ohio University's academic support unit serving undergraduate students from all colleges. The AAC provides free tutoring services in math, reading, and learning strategies, as well as a referral service to help students hire qualified tutors for specific subjects/courses. The AAC also provides Supplemental Instruction (SI) which offers free, out of class, study sessions for traditionally difficult courses. Sessions are led by students who have successfully completed the course. Other services include free help with a variety of computer skills in the AAC Computer Lab and the College Adjustment Program (CAP), designed to help students succeed at Ohio University through academic advising and counseling.

Student Writing Center
The Student Writing Center (SWC), located on the 2nd floor of Alden Library, supports students' intellectual and personal growth through assisting them with writing on all levels and in all disciplines. The SWC works closely with individual students, helping them to understand the nature of the writing process, to develop an awareness of personal writing competencies, to analyze how to reach their writing goals as individuals and in their various courses, and to practice how to integrate critical and creative thinking in their disciplinary writing. The SWC supports the mission of Ohio University's Center for Writing Excellence in affirming the central place of writing in the learning process, and advocating the premise that writing well is the hallmark of the educated citizen.

Computer Facilities
State-of-the-art computer resources and facilities are provided to university students. In addition to the desktop computer, printer and high-speed internet access found in every residence hall room, there are approximately 55 different computer labs on campus, featuring Windows and/or Macintosh operating systems.

University Libraries
The university's library system has holdings that include more than 3 million bound volumes and in excess of 35,000 periodicals and serials. Special collections include archives, a children's collection, and government documents. Alden Library, on the Athens campus, is open seven days a week and is staffed by experienced librarians and more than 250 student employees. Ohio University is a member of OhioLINK, a consortium of Ohio's college and university libraries and the State Library of Ohio, offering access to more than 39 million library items statewide. OhioLINK also provides access to 100 research databases, including 6,000 electronic journals and a variety of other full-text resources.

Alden Library offers over 200 computer workstations for accessing electronic information resources and for using applications software. Alden’s 2nd floor Learning Commons provides a unique combination of information resources, computers, expert assistance, and study spaces, in which individual students and groups can research, study, collaborate, and learn.
