The Major in Sociology With an Emphasis in Criminology

The department offers an option to major in sociology with an emphasis in criminology. The special curriculum in criminology is designed for students who desire careers in some aspect of criminal justice, yet who wish to receive a broad liberal arts education at the same time. Graduates are presently employed in a wide variety of diverse occupations ranging from juvenile probation to federal law enforcement. Other students use the criminology program as a foundation for future graduate study in sociology, criminology, or law.

Students completing the program receive a degree in sociology with the specialty in criminology noted. Thus, requirements include many courses required of all sociology majors, as well as more specialized courses in criminology and criminal justice. Some courses outside of sociology also are included, giving the program an interdisciplinary focus.

A sociology-criminology internship is offered for students in their senior year. Though not required, the internship offers students an opportunity to gain some practical experience, as well as a chance to explore potential careers. Interns work in a variety of organizations, currently including, for example, the county prosecutor’s office, the public defender's office, a victim assistance program, and a juvenile detention facility.

Students who qualify may also apply for the certificate program in Law, Justice and Culture.
