Did you have a ‘love at first sight’ experience with OHIO?
Very few people at OHIO don’t experience that. I’ve been to 10 or 11 different countries in the world, and this is probably the prettiest place I’ve ever been. I really don’t know what it is about OHIO – there must be something in the air which makes people really love this place.
You’re far from home. Do you get homesick?
Once you’re busy, you don’t have time to be homesick. Get involved from day one and you don’t have to worry about being homesick. My high school was just curriculum-based, there weren’t a lot of extracurriculars. I figured if I have all these (extracurricular) opportunities … I went to the involvement fair and signed up for everything. Then I started picking the things that I really liked. I signed up with the International Student Union and WOUB and AVW Productions.
How did you become a member of the tech crew for WOUB’s Newswatch?
Newswatch is a daily newscast at 5:30. The whole thing is a student production. I showed up for the first orientation and told them I don’t know the first thing about news production and I’m here to learn, and they said OK. Everyone at WOUB is always so eager to help you out and teach you.
Who is your favorite professor?
Don’t make me pick. They’re all really great in their own way. That’s one of the biggest things I like about OHIO. We’re all students here. Our first priority is to study and do well. When your professors are accessible and helpful and ready to meet you, it makes things that much easier.
How is it being a minority student?
I don’t feel like a minority anymore; I just feel like a student at OHIO.
What are your future goals?
My short-term goal is to start directing Newswatch next year. After I graduate, I want to start working in New York or Chicago at an ad agency as an account planner. That’s what I really like doing, market research.
Is OHIO preparing you to meet your goals?
Yes. My account planning class is going really well. They teach us about exactly what goes into market research and consumer research. At my internship (with Communiqué Advertising in Dubai) I did market research for a perfume company based in Dubai. Ad Club always has industry professionals come in and speak about what they’re doing. I’ve learned a lot listening to those people. A lot of them are OHIO alumni.
What does Bobcat pride mean to you?
WOUB is Bobcat pride. When we had the last show of Gridiron Glory, we were so pumped up. We did a really good job, and we felt that we had a chance at winning an Emmy. For me, that’s Bobcat pride – being part of a team like that.
