Composition Exemption Exams
(Tier 1 Waivers)
Students may take exemption/waiver exams for both the first-year (e.g. ENG 151) and junior level (J course) composition courses.  Both exams are two-hour timed essays based on a text that will be provided when the exam begins.  Exams are typically given in Ellis 111 on the first Saturday of fall, winter, and spring quarters at 9:45 AM.

Students must be registered to take either exam before the day of the exam.  Registration is free and occurs during the week preceding the exam in Alden Library Faculty Commons between 9AM and 5PM.  Students may only take each exam one time and must be registered as OU students during the quarter they take the exam.  In order to take the junior-level exam, students also must have a minimum of 90 credit hours and have successfully completed a first-year writing course (e.g. ENG 151).

Students who are exempted through the exam process do not receive credit hours for the courses.  The exam can only exempt students from the university-wide writing requirements.  Individual departments may have different major or minor requirements, so students should check with their departments before taking the exams.

Contact Melanie Lee at
(740) 597-1313 for more information.  The next exams will be held Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 9:45 AM.  Registration will be available September 9 - 12 in the Center for Writing Excellence, Alden Library Faculty Commons.
