Our special emphasis in this seminar will be on using blogs and wikis as a means of meeting students in the media they like to write in. We will discuss ways of incorporating informal and writing-to-learn activities into courses of all sizes as a means of enhancing student learning and providing valuable feedback to faculty. We will also discuss how blogs and wikis might be used for a range of formal writing, as well. Faculty will learn how to create and manage their own blogs and wikis for classroom use and see examples of the ways these tools can enhance students' learning.

Negotiating Plagiarism: Definitions and Responses
Monday, May 12, 2008 | Led by Dr. Sherrie Gradin
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM | 301U Faculty Commons | Refreshments
Plagiarism is a problem for all institutions of higher learning. Horror stories of cheating—buying papers, handing in a roommate’s paper, cutting and pasting from the internet, lifting material from other texts without citation or quotation—abound. As we struggle with our own responses of anger, frustration, and even betrayal, we ask why and how plagiarism got to be so rampant and what we can do to restore academic integrity to our campuses. In this seminar, our discussion will be grounded in research on plagiarism and the scholarship of textual borrowing. We will examine definitions of plagiarism, a range of appropriate responses, and then discuss actions we can take as teachers and mentors to create learning environments where student plagiarism is less likely to occur.
