ACADEMIC ADVANCEMENT CENTER SERVICES By Christina Osborne
A distraught student on academic probation sits in your office contemplating his unsatisfactory test scores. He took the first, difficult step to seek help. Now it’s up to you to give him the tools to succeed. You know the university offers academic support, but can it help your student? Of course.
The Academic Advancement Center (AAC), located on the first floor of Alden, provides scores of support services targeted toward undergraduate students of all majors, including study and reading skills, supplemental instruction, math help, tutorial assistance and a computer learning lab. The AAC strives to meet the needs of all students, from those trying to raise their GPA to those trying to prevent it from falling.
A common problem among college students is that they lack the study skills necessary to succeed in college. The AAC allows students to assess their own study habits online with interactive programs, meet one-on-one with a professional study skills and reading tutor or take a for credit course. Solid study habits create a smoother path toward graduation. Even with good study skills, some classes like Acct 101, Chem 151 and Math 115 can be problematic. For traditionally difficult courses, suggest supplemental instruction (SI). An SI leader attends class, collaborates with the professor and leads outside of class study sessions.
If your student’s problem is math-related, the AAC has several solutions. Students can ask a question online and receive a response within 24 hours, call tutors with quick questions on the math hotline or meet with a tutor, either individually or in a classroom setting. These services are available to any course requiring math, including accounting, statistics and economics. Since students’ struggles aren’t limited to math, neither are the AAC’s private tutors. The AAC continually recruits tutors in classes from anthropology to women’s studies. If a student needs a tutor for any course, the AAC will work to find one. To ease the process, it provides consulting to explain the process and fees associated with private tutoring.
For more information about any of these services, visit the AAC on the web at http://www.ohiou.edu/aac.
