Precollege Update
As the summer quickly approaches, the staff of Precollege is busily engaged in training. This year, the University is anticipating a near-record incoming class of 4100 freshmen and as many as 550 transfer students for the fall. Precollege orientation consists of fourteen day-and-a-half programs for first year students and two one-day programs for transfer students. These programs commence on July 20 and end August 12. The Precollege operation collaborates with many units, including housing, food service, student services, maintenance, housekeeping, and campus safety. All the academic units on campus provide faculty and deans for advising and parent discussions. Finally, the Precollege office employs 47 upper classmen to assist students both academically and socially in this huge transition. Of particular interest this year will be some 60 Learning Communities, a new session focused on commuter students, and the option for students to purchase lap-top computers at greatly reduced rates.
