The Advisors Toolbox: What is CAS?

For the past few years, public colleges and universities in Ohio have been working in conjunction with the Ohio Board of Regents to develop CAS, a web based system that provides students and academic advisors direct access to information about courses, equivalencies, programs, and degree audits.
Information is easily retrieved from the CAS site (www.transfer.org) on the internet by students, faculty, and the interested public. Creating an account in CAS is free. Students contemplating a transfer of institutions may submit their coursework to any institution within the CAS network for evaluation against that institutions academic programs. For students who become a CAS Member, CAS provides information on how their specific coursework will transfer and apply towards a degree at a CAS institution.
For academic advisors the Academic Programs section of CAS enables them to determine the coursework required of students for a particular degree at any participating institution. Additionally the Course Equivalency Guide section allows advisors to help students find which institutions offer an equivalent course to a particular OU course. This is especially useful when advisors help students to determine whether or not to take courses at another college during the summer. However, the student should always review those choices with the colleges student services office, which may also require the student to complete a petition for transient coursework.
Training on how to use CAS is available from Computer Services. The last session for spring quarter is May 18, 8-10 a.m. Visit http://www.ohio.edu/technology/training/seminarlist.cfm to register.
