Ohio University and University College Say Farewell to William Allen

Ohio University and University College said goodbye to William Allen on June 30. Bill retired after 35 years in University College where he served as an academic advisor, Assistant Dean, and Associate Dean. In his role as associate dean, Bill was responsible for overseeing the budget and supervisory and administrative duties, and he continued to manage a significant caseload of undecided and Specialized Studies advisees.
Bill's many contributions to the university and the college include leading the efforts to establish an individualized degree, the Bachelor of General (now Specialized) Studies, developing and coordinating an early re-entry program for academically dismissed students, and designing an advising program for academic probation students in University College. Similar programs still serve students each quarter and have been the model for programs in other academic units across the university.
Beginning in the 1980s, Bill led the development of and administered LINKS, a university-wide program to reduce minority student attrition. Over the years, LINKS expanded under Bill's direction to include both a summer and academic year program, which contributes to the success of African American, Hispanic, and Native American students.
His vision of and commitment to diversity and opportunity for all are exemplified in the programs to which he dedicated his time and efforts. Throughout his career, Bill served tirelessly on university committees charged with creating a diverse community at Ohio University, such as the Provost's Council on Minority Recruitment and Retention, the Synergy Task Force, and Advisory Council on Minority Recruitment and Retention, among many others.
The document that acknowledges his Outstanding Administrator Award of 1991, reads, "Bill is open, unbiased, a problem solver, a positive influence on students, a true educator, but above all, a wonderful human being."
Dr. David Descutner, Dean of University College, reminisces about Dr. Bill Allen:
Working with Bill was one of the best experiences I’ve had at Ohio University. I learned so much from him, and he regularly saved me from making mistakes by being honest and wise. Bill’s legacy is rich on this campus and just as rich off campus where hundreds of alumni remember him fondly for his guidance, advice, and mentoring. Bill was a true leader in every way, and he was a wonderful colleague who cared deeply about students and Ohio University.
Ohio University and University College are better places because of William Allen. His presence on campus will be missed, but we wish him the best in his well-earned retirement.
