Commuter + Adult Student Services
Meet the Mentors
We, the Commuter Mentors are similar to a Resident Assistant (RA), who is available at the dorms. We are available to answer any questions you might have about commuting, managing your time, classes to take, classes to put on hold, work, school, what to do for fun, and much more. We are easy to reach and want to help you out during your college experience. We are commuters, so consider us experts when it comes to attending OU as a commuter student. We will be contacting you frequently by e-mail to share important information and reminders. Feel free to e-mail either of us with any questions or concerns. Below is a note from each of us.
Lisa Dixon likes to think of herself as “townie”. She grew up in Athens County where she went to school at Alexander High School. She graduated from high school, knowing she was going to school at Ohio University, but not knowing what to major in. She feels that what helped the most with the transitions between high school and college was being in the Learning Community for Commuter Students. She really enjoyed the professors, the students she was grouped with (even though there was just the six of them) and luckily enough their main professor was also their advisor, Laura Chapman.
After volunteering at Bird Arena, being part of the Sign Language Club, working part time at the Library Annex, and still maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A, she was recognized as an Outstanding Student; for her first year at Ohio University. The experience with the Learning Community led her to become a Peer Mentor for students that were in the same situation as she had been in. Holding study groups, organizing activities, and taking the same course with her students helped her decide to major in Family Studies. With the positive experience and relationships she has had with both the students and professors, she hopes she can encourage the same positive relationships and experiences with the new commuter student body.
If you have any questions for Lisa, for now you can contact Lisa at Kristy’s mentor account at mentor_kt@hotmail.com
Hi! My name is Jonathan Nicholas. I’m a junior pursuing a double major in Digital Media Production and Computer Science. I started out in Computer Science and added on the Digital Media later because I thought I would enjoy that more. However, a year from now I might be in something completely different based on what classes I take and what I learn. And I’m fine with that because I believe that you should pursue a major you’re interested in and will enjoy, and not feel rushed into it. So, you should explore all the options available to you while you’re here because you never know how things may change.
I live in Athens and graduated from Athens High School (several years ago). I pursued other interests after high school until I eventually came back and started attending OU. I’m a huge fan of all kinds of movies especially animation or computer animation. So you might understand my choice in majors. With classes, studying, possibly choosing a major, and prerequisites, it can seem a bit much. I’m here to help you with any of the problems you might run into.
Anyway, don’t worry too much about being undecided or if you are unsure about your major because there is plenty of time to find one or change to a new one (or add a new one). Just be sure to enjoy yourself while you’re here and to take advantage of all the stuff OU offers. If you ever have anything to ask about or that you might need help on feel free to email me at mentor_jn@hotmail.com.
