About Doug Orr:
After I graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, I began a twenty year career as an active duty Army officer specializing in Military Intelligence. During my military career, my family and I moved thirteen times and lived in seven states - Arizona, Hawaii, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio. Also, while living in Hawaii, I traveled for extended periods to South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, and Australia.
I wanted to return as close as possible to my hometown of Cambridge, Ohio prior to completing my military service, so I volunteered for an assignment as the Professor of Military Science in the Army ROTC Department at Ohio University. My favorite part of that position was counseling and advising students on their academic, personal, and professional goals. When my military career was complete, I was delighted to accept a position as an academic advisor in University College so that I could continue to serve students.
I am married and have two children who attend Athens City Schools. In addition to activities with my children and my church, I also enjoy reading, running, bicycle riding, history, museums, and travel.
I particularly enjoy working with first year students as they are at such an interesting and important transition point in their lives. Also, I find them to be full of questions, energetic (assuming they get some sleep!), and willing to consider to new ideas.
