Learning Communities

What is a Learning Community?
Learning communities structure the curriculum by linking several courses together, enabling students to achieve deeper understanding of the course material and to have more sustained interactions with each other and their instructors. At Ohio University, first year students have the following learning community options:

First Year Learning Community Options
Linked Courses:
Linked courses are sponsored through University College's Career Center for Writing Excellence & Writing Across the Curriculum Program and the Department of English. In Linked Courses a group of twenty students take two courses together. One course is English 153, and other courses are general education lecture courses such as Geography 121. Visit the Linked Course website: http://www.ohiou.edu/writing/paired_linked_courses.htm or ask your Precollege advisor about this option if you are interested.

Learning Communities (LC):  In a Learning Community a group of 15-20 students take two general education courses together and UC 115, a First-Year Seminar course.  These communities may be college-based (offered to students in a particular college) or participant-based (such as a commuter student LC.) Some may have a residential component as well (RLC.)  Ask your Precollege advisor for more information or visit the website www.ohio.edu/precollege/.

Residential Learning Communities (RLC):  First-year students living in selected residence halls or residential areas across campus take two general education courses in common as well as UC 115, a First-Year Seminar course. UC 115 is the center of the community, which revolves around a theme and is taught by the students' Resident Director with the assistance of a Peer Mentor. Out-of-class activities such as picnics, field trips, and study sessions are integrated into the communities. Visit the Learning Communities website at www.ohio.edu/learningcommunities/ or ask your Precollege advisor for more information.

The Global Learning Community (GLC):
Prepares students for leadership opportunities in a rapidly changing world. The GLC is open to all majors and brings together the resources of three of the university's top-performing colleges--Business, Communication and Arts and Sciences--in an interdisciplinary 30 quarter-hour undergraduate certificate program on global issues, with a strong emphasis on real-world projects and problem solving skills. Students enter the GLC in fall of their sophomore year. Please visit the GLC Web site for more information.
