Make a Difference: Teach UC 115


Position Title: University Experience (UC 115) Course Instructor

Course Description: 
[Prerequisite] - first quarter student, undecided about choice of major.  Designed to assist first year students successfully transition to the academic community of Ohio University.  Students learn proven strategies for creating greater academic and career success and receive an orientation to campus academic support resources.   Students also explore the process of choosing a major and a career while assessing their own interests, values, and abilities.  Out of class assignments emphasize involvement in student life and campus activities.  Course is normally limited to twenty or fewer students to allow for discussion and class participation.  UC 115 often serves as the core course of a learning community*. (2 credits)

Employment Options: Overload or Part-time contract; Practicum Credit (Graduate Students only); Volunteer

Compensation if employed on contract: $1400-$1900 - commensurate with highest level of education earned and Ohio University employment status (see Compensation Chart for details); Additional compensation may be provided if you also serve as the academic advisor for your students throughout the academic year (details on advisor compensation will be provided separately). While we encourage all UC 115 instructors to consider advising, it is optional and does not fit everyone's situation.

Qualifications:
1.    Master’s or PhD preferred
2.    Current faculty and administrator of Ohio University preferred
3.    Minimum of two years experience teaching or working directly with students in higher education strongly preferred
4.    Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal), time management and interpersonal skills
5.    Authorization from supervisor is required if employed by Ohio University in either a full time or part-time position.
6.    A limited number of instructor positions are available for graduate students.  Graduate students must have the permission of their program directors and/or practicum supervisor and only teach for practicum credit, as volunteers, or as part of their assigned GA duties. 

Duties and Responsibilities:
1.    Attend and actively participate in a one day Instructor Development Workshop before the quarter begins.
2.    Prepare for and teach the course. This includes but is not limited to the following:
a)    Follow syllabus that is provided by the Course Director.  Some adjustments permitted with the approval of the Course Director. 
b)    Attend all classes; in case of an emergency or planned absence, make arrangements for a substitute instructor
c)    Serve as a role model, referral, and a resource to students.
3.    Supervise and meet weekly with an assigned Peer Mentor.  Peer Mentors can assist the instructor with class preparation, help facilitate class discussion, and teach selected topics under the instructor’s supervision.
4.    Attend a minimum of one out of class activity with students.  The activity will be coordinated by the Peer Mentor.
5.    Estimated time commitment is 4-8 hours weekly - 2 hours of fixed class time per week and 2-6 hours per week of out of class preparation and grading.  Multiple options for class times will be available.
6.    If also serving as an advisor, follow the advising guidelines and procedures provided by University College.
Advisors are responsible for being accessible and responsive to students, and for providing accurate, timely information.
7.    If a first time instructor, attend four or more one-hour "brown bag" instructor support sessions, normally held on Friday afternoon. If a returning instructor, attend two or more one-hour "brown bag" instructor support sessions, normally held on Friday afternoon.



* A learning community (LC) is a group of students who take a common set of courses together or share a common experience around their academics. Participants in an LC develop a deeper understanding of the courses’ subject matter while they build relationships and learn together outside of the classroom.  For more information about the Learning Community Program as a whole, the University College Learning Communities, and the role of the Peer Mentors, see the website at www.ohio.edu/learningcommunities.
